Fans of the “Hobbit” around the world are breathing a sigh of relief today. Not only are they a mere six months away from their next fix of Middle-earth madness, December’s “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” but the first trailer for the prequel trilogy’s second installment just went live.
“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” recounts the early adventures of Frodo Baggins’ older cousin Bilbo as he journeys with a band of dwarves to reclaim the gold stolen from their people by a dragon, whose name is front and center in the title.
When we last left Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves in last year’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the company had just nearly escaped another run-in with the orcs thanks to a well-timed intervention from the ever-helpful eagles.
Now, without the help of Gandalf, who is off to attend to other matters that we’ll learn about, Bilbo and the dwarves must brave Mirkwood Forrest and the creatures living in it, including gigantic spiders and a band of elves, among whom you might find a familiar face. Orlando Bloom is reprising the role of Legolas, which originally launched his career in 2001.
“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” opens in theaters on December 13.
