Tonight both America and Jamaica celebrate as Tessanne Chin is crowned season five’s winner of .
After weeks of enduring the “long, vigorous, taxing procedure,” as Cee Lo Green put it, Team Adam’s island beauty trumped competitors Jacquie Lee and Will Champlin for the win.
The celebratory show kicked off with a reunion by the Top 20 who sang the fitting song “Tonight Is The Night,” which was literal for Chin who just won a Universal Music recording contract, along with the coveted title. The top three also received a holiday surprise of a new car.
It was an eventful night with back-to-back musical acts that left audiences mesmerized.
For the first “Bring Back” performance, Jacquie Lee performed “Bohemian Rhapsody” alongside former teammate Matthew Schuler, her bestie Caroline Pennell, Cole Vosbury and James Wolpert in perfect unison. The theatrical set was executed with perfection, class and a bit of humor, which is always a welcome addition.
Two world-class singers then came together when Tessanne Chin sang with the one and only Celine Dion. Singing “Love Can Move Mountains,” the pair brought the coaches to their feet for a standing ovation. Dion late returned to the stage to perform her new “Incredible” collaboration with Ne-Yo, an energetic ballad that blew minds.
Will Champlin brought back Cole Vosbury, Jonny Gray, Caroline Pennell and Austin Jenckes for “Wagon Wheel,” a song suited for some of the most unique voices of the season. But Team Adam’s indie rocker had his #Champs all riled up when he performed alongside Aloe Blacc for the Avicii hit “Wake Me Up,” giving the show a final taste of his personal musical stylings.
OneRepublic kept the momentum up with a triumphant and rousing performance of “I Live” and Lee enjoyed a jam session chock full of hair swirling and foot stomping with Paramore to “Ain’t It Fun.”
Besides the big names, it was quite a “Treasure” to see top 20 boys Josh Logan, Nik Hawk, Matthew Schuler, Ray Boudreaux, and Preston Pohl represent with the sexy Bruno Mars number, but some powerful females were hot on their heels. Kat Robichaud, Shelbie Z, Stephanie Ann Johnson, Amber Nicole, Tamara Chauniece and Grey also delivered a riveting rendition of “My Life Would Suck Without You.”
The fun continued as Tessanne brought back some of the strongest voices in the competition – James Wolpert, Preston Pohl, Olivia Hencken and Grey for “Hold On, I’m Coming.” The refreshing performance received a standing O.
The show also took time out to poke fun at its coaches including the Sexiest Man Alive, revealing what Adam Levine is really like off-camera — quirky and smelly, it seems. “The Poetry of Life” took several pages of Cee Lo-isms and brought them to life including gems like “you don’t sing to be seen,” making us all feel better knowing we weren’t the only ones who didn’t understand a word he said. Xtina got an early birthday nod when the show revealed that singing is not the only “amazing sounds she makes.” We’ll let you use your imaginations for that one, and apparently “Break-It-Down Blake” is secretly a dancer. Right.
But if you thought the festivities were ending there, you were highly mistaken because Lady Gaga owned the stage with her artsy disco performance of “Do What U Want.” Clearly missing was original duet partner R. Kelly but there was no reason to fret because Christina Aguilera more than filled those shoes, at one point nestling Gaga into her chest and admitting “woman-to-woman” that the ARTPOP singer was one of the most “real, down-to-earth” people she had ever met.
The fun and games eventually had to end when the moment of truth finally arrived. As the top three were rounded up, Will Champlin was announced the artist in third place, leaving Chin and Lee the final contenders. And with a couple passing moments, host Carson Daly proclaimed Tessanne the season five winner.
Despite breaking down in tears, the classy singer pulled herself together to close the night with guest mentor Ryan Tedder’s original song “Tumbling Down,” but we have a feeling it’s all uphill from here for the songstress.
Congrats, Tessanne!
