‘The Voice’ Recap: Did We Find One Direction’s Newest Member?

The second round of battles continued on “The Voice” Tuesday night (April 1) as eight more singers returned to the battle stage hoping for one last vocal victory.

Coaches Adam Levine, Shakira, Usher, and Blake Shelton found themselves with more tough decisions to make as the night’s singers continued to surprise them, and even had them skeptical of their earthly existence.

Here’s how the night went down:

This Is Sisaundra’s World
Team Blake’s Biff Gore and Sisaundra Lewis got the night started on an otherworldly note with their performance of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World.” Both soulful and powerhouse singers, Gore and Lewis gave passionate performances that resonated with the audience, receiving a standing ovation from all the coaches, and giving Usher chills. Levine was “80 percent sure [Lewis was] not from planet Earth,” a sentiment shared by guest mentor Chris Martin at rehearsals. Although Gore’s “timeless voice” was one to praise, Shelton declared Lewis’ “nuclear bomb” of a voice the winner of the battle.

“Say Something” Comes Full Circle
Ddendyl and Deja Hall duked it out in the battle arena for a spot on Shakira’s playoff team. Singing “Say Something,” a song that was first debuted on season five of “The Voice,” the two singers let power take a back seat, and channeled all the emotion needed for such a song. Their tender and soft voices resonated with the audience, and received a standing ovation from their coach.

Levine commended 16-year-old Hall for having a mature voice at such a young age, and Shelton praised both singers’ “innocent and honest” voices. Shakira declared Deja Hall’s “earthly voice” the winner, confident that she can do so much with the young singer, and truly tap into her full potential.

Meet The Sixth Member Of One Direction
Team Usher’s Stevie Jo and Morgan Wallen closed off the night with a vocal performance that surprised everyone in the room — yes, even their own coach. Jo’s smooth tone coupled with Morgan’s raspy tone made for a compelling performance of One Direction’s “Story of My Life,” Levine even saying that while the original is sung by boys, the song was “sung by a couple of men up there” on the battle stage. Wallen flawlessly and impressively hit his falsettos, a skill his coach — and Wallen himself admittedly — knew nothing about before the battle, and one that made Shakira feel as though she were watching “another member of One Direction.” In the end, Usher declared Stevie Jo the winner, but as Wallen went to greet Levine with a fist bump, Levine greeted him with a push of his steal button.

The second round of battles comes to a fierce conclusion next Monday at 8 p.m. on NBC, and playoffs will officially kick on Tuesday night.
