“The Voice” continued its intense live rounds Monday night with the top eight taking the stage. Teams Blake and Adam are leading the pack with three artists each, while Shakira and Usher are holding on by the thread with one.
Although Blake Shelton opened the show with his new single, “Boys Around Here,” only two boys actually remain, with the competition gearing up to be an all-female battle. With their fate in the hands of the voting public, artists stepped up their games for a chance to win.
Power Girl
Team Adam’s Judith Hill proved herself again last night by taking on the enormous challenge of covering will.i.am’s “ThatPower” featuring Justin Bieber, an EDM-heavy song that seemed out of her range. Not only did she step up to the plate, but Hill knocked it out of the park with a performance that transcended the competition. Coach Levine put it best when he said, “This is not a contestant on ‘The Voice’; this is an artist.”
The Lone Brothers
The Swon Brothers are the only duo in the show’s short history to make it to the top eight and are currently the only males left in the competition. The Oklahoma natives have had a tough week in the wake of last week’s tornado, but the pair laid their hearts out while singing “Seven Bridges Road” by the Eagles. While the brothers are “complicated, in a really good way,” according to Shelton, there was nothing complicated about their performance, with Shakira noting how well it “suited” their voices and Usher tipping his hat to the boys.
Voice of the Underdog
Michelle Chamuel has created a movement among those without a voice. Recognizing his artist represents “true inner beauty,” coach Usher donned her trademark black-rimmed glasses to show his support before she took on Bruno Mars’ “Grenade.” The lone soldier for Team Usher put on a “dynamic” and theatrical performance filled with mirrors, pianists and violinists that Shakira called “spectacular.” Shelton found it hard to believe that “such a big voice comes out of such a little human being,” but Usher didn’t have a shadow of doubt in his mentee even proclaiming he’d catch a grenade for her.
The Big Leagues
Amber Carrington just put herself in the big leagues. There are a few artists whose songs you don’t touch on reality competitions, including Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and, more recently, Adele. Well, coach Levine wanted to challenge his country starlet by giving her the enormous task of singing Adele’s “Skyfall.” While Shakira was “perplexed” with Levine’s song choice, Carrington rose to the occasion giving the “diva powerhouse vocal of the night,” according to Shelton.
The top eight will dwindle down to six Tuesday night as “The Voice” continues its search for a champion.
