When “The Voice” revealed its final three contestants on Tuesday night, it was not without some shock and awe.
Fall Out Boy began the night performing their new single “Light ‘Em Up” with Usher‘s affable misfit Michelle Chamuel. The stint, full of energy and a lot of pyro, proved Chamuel’s ability to stand her own in the big leagues, as she held vocally strong with the seasoned band.
It wasn’t a surprise when she was revealed as the first finalist to take part in the season 4 finale next week. “She’s medicine for our country, our world,” her doting coach Usher said about Chamuel earlier in the night.
It was also a celebration of contestants past as season 3 alumni Nicholas David, Tony Lucca and runner-up Terry McDermott returned to the stage with new singles. David reminded the audience why they fell in love with the smooth soul man as he sang “Say Goodbye” off his four-song EP due out that night. Former Mouseketeer Lucca not only performed his track “Never Gonna Let You Go,” but also revealed he has been signed to coach Levine’s 222 Records and will be touring with Maroon 5 in the fall. And last, but not least, McDermott’s ever-pristine rock vocals shone through, as usual, in his new single, “Pictures,” which already topped the iTunes rock charts.
With only two spots left and four contestants, everyone in question was on the edge of their seats. Shelton’s front-runner was eventually announced as the second finalist, leaving his Swon Brothers, Levine’s Amber Carrington, and Shakira’s Sasha Allen on the chopping block. As tension built with only a few minutes left in the show, host Carson Daly finally revealed a surprise result — the Swon Brothers were safe, continuing the country domination of season 4. The show’s underdogs recently began picking up steam, winning over country fans and even their coach Shelton, who has previously admitted being harder on the boys than his other artists.
So, for now, “The Voice” says goodbye to not only Amber Carrington and Sasha Allen, but their respective coaches who will now watch the finale from the sidelines.
As the newbie, this will be Usher’s first time in the finale, facing the reigning champion Shelton with already two wins under his belt and the obvious advantage with two contestants.
