First, watch this vintage (2006 is vintage, right?) MTV cast interview with Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni (who plays Veronica’s dad) and writer/director/creator Rob Thomas, as they talk about how the classic show actually got on the air in the first place.
“There are a few shows out there, great ones like ‘Alias’ and ‘Buffy,’ that really give a woman the chance to be strong,” Bell said. “And I like the fact that Veronica is so young and able to do that.”
These Are The ‘Veronica Mars’ Books Covers You Wish Actually Existed
Veronica’s not quite as young in the upcoming film, but she’s still an exemplar of an awesome female character. Amazingly, she almost wasn’t a detective at first, but Thomas said that he had to find a new twist on the standard teen character show.
“It was my way to fuse a teen drama and a show that was case-driven,” he said. “I might have wanted to do a straight character show like a ‘Freaks and Geeks’ … Making the teenager a detective allowed me to get it on the air.”
And in case that doesn’t have you nostalgic enough, have some fun with these then/now photographs of Bell, Thomas, Colantoni and Veronica’s love interests.
Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars)
A little older, a little wiser, and just a slightly less ridiculously large camera.
Ryan Hansen (Dick)
The hair’s not as Slim Shady bleached-blond, but it’s still plenty shaggy.
Jason Dohring (Logan)
One word for the “now” Logan: smoldering.
Enrico Colantoni (Keith Mars)
Is it just us, or does he actually look younger now?
Chris Lowell (Piz)
Even all these years later, Piz looks just slightly confused.
Full Cast
I bet the young TV actors on the bottom would never have thought they’d become the movie stars on top.
Remember to check out “Veronica Mars” on the big screen (finally!) Friday, March 14.
