Watch Hugh Jackman’s First Wolverine Audition

He’s the best there is at what he does — but he wasn’t always the best.

Hugh Jackman, international superstar thanks to his role as Wolverine across seven different “X-Men” movies, wasn’t always so comfortable brandishing those adamantium claws. The Australian actor was a latecomer to 2000′s “X-Men,” joining the cast at the last minute after Dougray Scott dropped out of the film.

At the time, nobody knew anything about Jackman; he was a complete unknown to the mainstream moviegoing masses. How was he able to dig his claws into one of the most iconic comic book roles of all time?

Well, thanks to an audition video unearthed by ComicBookMovie.com, we have an answer. Watch the 11-minute video below to check out Jackman’s initial audition to play the fast-healing mutant:

The video features Jackman, no more than 30 years old at the time, reading Wolverine’s lines with the actor’s own Australian accent — an accent he eventually abandoned when he won the role. Interestingly enough, Jackman was not the first Australian Wolverine.

What do you think of Jackman’s Wolverine audition?
