Tiesto Thinks ‘Girls Can Be Just As Good As Guys’ In Dance Music

Although Krewella and Icona Pop are featured on Tiesto‘s sixth studio album, A Town Called Paradise, the two groups are usually some of the only women in the genre in general. Popular female singers usually carry the fiercely melodic vocals on pop-EDM tracks, but when it comes to lady producers, they are few and far between.

Tiesto attributes this imbalance to the simple preferences of kids; boys tend to like tech-y stuff more than girls at a young age.

“I think it’s mainly a thing in the beginning, when you are 16 or 15…not that many girls are into the technical stuff of DJ’ing, or programming on their laptops,” he explained. “They like to do other stuff. I guess that the main reason.”

That may have been the case when EDM was first on the rise to mainstream popularity, but Tiesto agrees this trend can and will change. Already, producer duo NERVO is known for writing phenomenal tunes AND being world-class models, so these days, girls really can have it all.

On A Town Called Paradise, Tiesto says Icona Pop brings a feminine energy with “Let’s Go.”

“I met Icona Pop years ago and we always got along very well. I always wanted to work with them, but they were so busy with ‘I Love It,’” he said. “They make [Let’s Go] good! I make a lot of manly songs and they made it more girly… it’s nice to make girly songs too.”

Why do you think there far fewer women than men in EDM? Tell us in the comments.
