MTV’s latest “True Life” told the stories of two young women facing a battle of the bulge — and dealing with their boyfriends’ frustrations over their excess weight. We had an opportunity to check in with Sara and Desiree to find out what they’ve been up to since filming wrapped. Take a look at the follow-up Q&As:
SARA
How’s it going with your weight loss, exercise and diet?
I’ve been working out three to five times a week. I’ve been practicing yoga and taking Zumba classes. On the weekend, [my boyfriend] Enrique and I walk or jog three miles at the beach together. We also go to the gym together a couple times a week. I’ve lost about 15 pounds since starting my exercise routine and eating healthier, and I plan to lose more. Finding something I actually enjoy doing has made it easier to stick to my exercise goals.
Has Enrique stuck to his promise and backed off about your weight, or is he still making comments?
Enrique still encourages me to work out and eat healthy, but he has stopped making negative and hurtful comments about my weight.
Has he lost the weight he gained after moving in with you?
Yes…and he continues to go the gym four to five times a week, for at least three hours each time.
What was it like sharing your story with us?
Sharing my story was kinda scary when thinking about the negative comments viewers may make about us, but it was also an interesting experience. It did make me reflect on my life and think about what I want and don’t want in a partner. I’ve realized that I don’t deserve for my boyfriend to make degrading, hurtful comments to me, and I won’t put up with it. I think sharing our story has helped Enrique somewhat understand where I’m coming from and see things from my point of view.
DESIREE
When are you and Derrick going to get married?
We’re going to tie the knot in October 2015.
How’s your baby doing?
My baby is doing well. He is a breath of fresh air to my lungs. I’m so proud of him doing well, considering he was a premature baby.
Now that you’re a new mom, do you have time to exercise?
Yes, I find myself walking a lot more, and I take time to do some exercises at home.
Are you and Derrick staying active together?
We’re still doing more active things together. We’ve improved a lot since the show, and we’re expecting to do even more new things.
What have you and Derrick been doing since shooting ended?
We’re both being good parents to our son. He is the number one priority in our lives now. We’re still trying to pursue our dreams in the music business.
What was it like sharing your story with us?
The journey through this whole experience of sharing my story was an everlasting memory. I’m so happy that I’m able to keep the movement of being big and beautiful. It’s wonderful, but being healthy is the most important thing. Through my struggles of losing weight, I learned to be motivated by my loved ones. I know there are a lot of girls going through this and struggling with weight loss. I’m a witness to tell people to never give up; find whatever your motivation is to make a change, and do it. That’s what got me through the tough times of wanting to give up and relapse on my diet and exercises, so I hope my story touches lives.
