Twenty One Pilots Bring ‘Underdog’ Mentality To Summer Festival Circuit

Twenty One Pilots‘ name is literally the last on the bill for this year’s Reading and Leeds festivals … though that’s fine with them: It just means they’ve got more to prove.

“You have to start somewhere, and I’ve seen a few posters, overseas, where things are just starting to pick up, and you look for your name on the poster and you’re like ‘Wait, okay, where is it … Oh! It’s all the way down there!’ frontman Tyler Joseph laughed. “And, it’s still an honor to be on that poster with all those bands. But at the same time, I’d be lying if there wasn’t a sense of being the underdog, of wanting to really make a statement when we play these shows.”

So yes, Joseph and drummer Josh Dun are heading into the UK’s most iconic summer festivals with rather sizeable chips on their shoulders, but they’ll have plenty of time to hone their live act for the masses; they’ve been booked on a spate of festivals here in the states … including Sweet Life, Firefly and Hangout.

And, like they told MTV News in the lead-up to their Vessel album, Twenty One Pilots are looking to not only conquer those masses, but convert them, too.

“When you watch a band play, you can tell when the lead singer can react to what’s going on in the audience; not every show is the same, not every crowd is the same, not every stage is the same,” Joseph said. “So, we pride ourselves on being able to feel out what energy is there, maybe being the ones to interject that energy, and then have a conversation with that crowd, where, at the end of the set, they’re part of the show.”
