For Video Music Awards veterans — like the ever-present Justin Timberlake or frequent performer Pink — Wednesday’s nominee announcement meant a “thank you” tweet and a morning mimosa. But for artists presented with their first-ever ticket to the legendary awards show, it called for an all-out celebration — one with popped champagne and “DAMNs” all around.
We’re not sure about you, but we at MTV News don’t like a half-baked party. So we’re honoring some of the best celebrations so far from this year’s VMA nominees — for those of age, get your bubbly ready.
You could forget the past, but as Taylor Swift has proved time and time again, it’s so much more fun to use it to your advantage. When the Red singer heard that she was up for two awards at the August 25 show — her “I Knew You Were Trouble” is a contender for both Video of the Year and Best Female Video — she used the moment to make a somewhat snide remark referencing an onstage interruption hear around the world. Kanye West’s interruption during her acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs.
Apparently, Robin Thicke took Wednesday’s announcement as an excuse to start pregaming for the August show. When he stopped by the MTV Newsroom Wednesday afternoon, he shared that he has every intention of being “roaring drunk” if he ends up onstage to take home Video of the Year award for his ubiquitous “Blurred Lines.” Careful, Robin: just don’t be that guy.
Sure, he may have just learned that he’ll be leading this year’s pack alongside Justin Timberlake with six VMA nominations, but that only prompted Macklemore to get to work. After sharing just how “DAMN” excited he is on Twitter, the Seattle-bred rapper told us he’s already hard at work on a top-secret music video. At this pace, his six nods will be nothing compared to his 2014 prospects.
Iggy Azalea treated her first VMA nomination like her first day at school — in a flawless outfit and perfect hairdo. From the looks of her personal “thank you” message, she will not be wearing meat to the show.
“Do I wear a suit or a t-shirt?” Ed Sheeran asked MTV News when we hopped on the phone with him after the big announcement. It’s a valid question — after all, Lady Gaga once showed up in meat, and then there was that time Nicki Minaj dressed up as a catholic priest. No matter what Sheeran ends up wearing, if “Lego House” earns a Moonman, he says there will be “a lot of bling” when he and friend TSwift “pretend to be rappers.” We’re not sure exactly what that means, but it sounds like a party.
Seriously. Anyone who can look at that face and not vote for Austin Mahone has no soul.
