Watch Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Surprise Unsuspecting Commuters With Bus Performance

It’s safe to assume that when Macklemore & Ryan Lewis arrive at the 2014 Grammy Awards on January 26, they’ll do so in a limousine or some other luxurious form of transportation. While the duo’s success has surely afforded them all the finer things in life, Mack and Ryan haven’t forgotten about the days when they did ordinary things, like ride the bus.

In a new online spot used to promote the Grammys, the hit-making duo hops aboard a Hunts Point-bound bus in New York and start performing their #1 hit “Can’t Hold Us” for unsuspecting straphangers.

At the start of the viral clip, the driver pulls up to the bus stop to pick up the two rap stars, then after Macklemore pays his fare, Lewis presses play on a boombox. The diverse group of commuters immediately turn their NYC scowls to smiles as they clap, sing and, of course, take vids of the performance.

The video comes off as a once-in-a-lifetime, hidden camera moment in favor of the Grammys, where Macklemore and Ryan will perform and possibly take home one or more of the seven gramophones that they are up for.

“Up until a year, a year and a half ago, we were an underground rapper that only a small percentage of the population had heard,” Macklemore told MTV News in December after learning about his nominations. “And to be here, and to reach this scale, I would have never thought that our music would affect this many people and be heard by this many people. It’s the highest honor; it’s the peak of what you strive for in terms of being recognized for the music that you make.”
