Watch Tris Fight — And Make Out — In Ellie Goulding’s ‘Divergent’ Lyric Video

Ellie Goulding‘s “Divergent” single may be called “Beating Heart,” but the lyric video for the jam has my heart pretty much tearing itself out of my chest.

Yup, the video — which premiered Monday (February 24) — features not only some massively action-packed footage, but also plenty of lip-locking. Get out your tissues, kids!

The lyric video, which dropped today on Entertainment Weekly, is like a fast-forward version of the flick, due to hit theaters on March 21. Over the course of the video, fans can watch Tris (Shailene Woodley) training at the Dauntless compound, scaling the massive ferris wheel at what used to be Navy Pier in Chicago and, of course, sharing some, ahem, intimate moments with instructor/future boyfriend Four (Theo James).

Over it all pounds Goulding’s driving track, a stirring call to stick it out, to persevere. “Wanna hear your beating heart,” she cries, as Tris spars and stands stoically as knives whiz by her face.

According to director Neil Burger, the track will appear at the end of the film. “In the last scene of the movie, Tris has just experienced multiple tragedies, even as she triumphs (for the moment) over her enemies,” he told EW. “Ellie wrote ‘Beating Heart’ and we knew it’d be perfect for the end of the movie. Her lyrics almost merge with Tris’ voice-over and her music lets the movie soar above the tragedy. The sadness is still there but so is the transcendence. It’s a fantastic song.”

Goulding’s music will be deeply woven into the fabric of the YA adaptation; not only did she pen a track for the film, tunes from her sophomore album, Halcyon, will also appear on the soundtrack. She will also be featured in the film’s score, which was composed by Junkie XL and executive produced by Hans Zimmer.

“We started working on the film with songs from Ellie Goulding’s album Halcyon and soon found that the texture of her music and the tone of her voice matched perfectly with our film,” said Burger in a release. “In many ways Ellie has become the inner voice of our heroine Tris.”
