From twerking on Santa to battling the president, the Pope and Syrian president Bashar Assad for the honor of Time magazine’s Person of the Year, there’s no doubt Miley Cyrus had a pretty huge weekend.
It’s hard to say which moment was the most surprising. Miley backing it up on jolly ol’ St. Nick at Friday night’s Jingle Ball in Los Angeles while wearing a spangly sexy Santa two-piece and sharing the stage with scantily clad reindeer, or her inclusion on Time‘s year-end honor roll.
While the Jingle Ball set ranked up there with her VMA foam finger moment, the bigger shock Monday morning (December 9) was when Time managing editor Nancy Gibbs announced the finalist for the magazine’s annual honor.
Sure, there were some usual suspects in the mix, including President Obama (2008 and 2012’s winner), the reform-minded Pope Francis and N.S.A. secrets leaker Edward Snowden, who made the mix alongside Iranian president Hassan Rouhani and Syrian president Bashar Assad. If only because he’s promising to deliver packages by drone, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos earned a spot.
You can see how government shutdown leader Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz made the cut, along with Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services and congressional target for the botched roll-out of health care website. And certainly Edith Windsor, a gay rights activist whose Supreme Court case challenging the Defense of Marriage Act helped overturn the federal ban on gay marriage.
Does Miley deserve to be considered for Time Person of the Year?
And then, right there in the mix, was Miley Ray Cyrus, the 21-yar-old popnado whose Bangerz has ruled radio with the #1 singles “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball.” Now, keep in mind those on the short list earn their spots based on being the person Time‘s editors think most influenced the new this year, for good or bad.
Last week, Egyptian general Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, who helped topple the democratically elected government in that country won the Person of the Year reader’s poll. Miley as in the mix on that one too, coming in third with 16.3 percent of the vote (279,300).
It’s hard to argue that Cyrus didn’t have an epic year, what with her long lead-up to the release of Bangerz, the insane “We Can’t Stop” video, her VMA moment and birthday blowout that won’t soon be forgotten.
Will she make the final cut for Time‘s cover? Who knows, but you can’t argue that Miley was one of the year’s most headline-grabbing, media-dominating personalities.
