In a heartbreaking scene to end the week, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal recount the difficulties of coping with the death of actor Robin Williams. The beloved comedian succumbed to his depression just last month at the age of 63.
“Robin and I, as we got older, we became this amazing bond and very protective of each other,” Crystal says. “And we were very protective of Whoopi.”
Crystal went on to describe how he and Robin kept a watchful eye over Whoopi as she took on her first Oscars hosting gig. The recounting of Crystal and William’s phone exchange brought Goldberg to tears over the unique relationship the trio experienced.
Goldberg also shared a clip from when the three came together in 1986 for the “Comic Relief” fundraiser aimed at raising funds for healthcare for the homeless.
Crystal recently paid a heartfelt tribute to the late actor at this year’s Emmy awards, stating, “I spent many happy hours with Robin on stage. I mean, the brilliance was astounding. The relentless energy was kind of … thrilling. I used to think if I could just put a saddle on him and stay on for eight seconds, I was going to do okay.”
