Last night, the audience in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con was introduced to “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Marvel’s first foray into some serious sci-fi space action, and the early footage screened was unlike anything the studio has put out before. Scenes screened even looked fairly different from the concept art that Marvel brought to last year’s Comic-Con, as you can see in poster released after the panel. The line-up style poster that debuted last night shows off the revised character designs, which are now based on the looks of the actors.
When MTV News’ Josh Horowitz caught up with Chris Pratt and Saldana, who play Star-Lord and Gamora, respectively, they talked about how “Guardians of the Galaxy” would be unlike not only any other Marvel movie, but any other superhero movie. “It’s absolutely mad. It’s a superhero movie, but it’s funny,” Saldana said. “It’s super, super funny. There’s so much levity.”
As Pratt explained, what makes “Guardians of the Galaxy” so “mad,” and hopefully funny, is how it engages the expectations of a superhero movie and goes in the opposite direction.
“I think this is the kind of movie that flips hero movie moments on their head. You understand the structure if you watch a lot of superhero movies: the origin of who these guys are, the big dilemma, the bad guy, the big speeches,” Pratt said. “People know what they expect, and with this movie, it takes what you expect and flips it a little bit in a way that’s funny because it’s ironic. I think that’s how comedy works, really. You set up someone to expect something and deliver something different. That’s what makes this movie funny. It’s still high stakes. It’s still a great adventure.”
But since “Guardians” is a sci-fi movie set in space, the world around these characters has to be just as bizarre, and to create that environment, the production has built extensive sets in London, as supposed to relying heavily on CGI.
“There are unbelievably imaginative worlds, insane effects and alien makeup, stuff you have never seen before,” Pratt said. “Amazing spaceships and true physical sets that aren’t all green screen. They’re building these things out in London that are 150 by 150 yards, 100 feet tall. I feel like I’m inside a multimillion dollar aquarium every day.”
“Guardians of the Galaxy” will hit theaters on August 1, 2014.
