“The Wolf of Wall Street” marks the fifth collaboration between actor Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese, and though we have enjoyed all of their work together to date, the first trailer for their new film has us thinking that their previous efforts have been missing something: Kanye West.
The sounds of “Black Skinhead,” off of West’s, Yeezus, back the entirety of the first trailer for “Wolf of Wall Street,” Scorsese’s look back at the outrageous decadence of ’90s Wall Street. The out-of-control party scenes, one of which includes literally tossing a little person in a Velcro suit at a target, even recall the heightened world of DiCaprio’s last movie,
DiCaprio plays Jordan Belfort, a financial prodigy who made $49 million the year he turned 26, which “really pissed him off because it was three shy of one million a week.” The story of “Wolf of Wall Street” comes from Belfort’s own memoir, which recalls his meteoric rise and spectacular fall. The book’s cover summarizes his story well: “Stock market multimillionaire at 26; federal convict at 36.”
On screen, DiCaprio is joined by Jonah Hill and Matthew McConaughey, who play Belfort’s partner and mentor, respectively.
The tone of the trailer hints that this might be one of Scorsese’s more humorous looks inside of a criminal world, reminiscent of “Goodfellas” and “Casino” but focusing on white-collar crime. DiCaprio looks like he’s having more fun, a trend that started with his turned as the villainous Calvin Candie in “Django Unchained.”
“The Wolf of Wall Street” is set for release on November 15, the heart of awards season, so expect to hear a lot more about this film before then.
