Since establishing the Wu-Tang Clan in 1993, RZA and his nine-man crew have added dozens of rappers to the family. When it comes to Christ Bearer, the Wu-affiliate who cut off his penis and attempted suicide on Wednesday, the head Clansman has just as many questions as the rest of us.
“It’s sad that it’s Wu-Tang affiliated. It’s like dirty press in a way,” RZA told XXLMag.com in an interview on Thursday. “I want to know what the f— moved him to do those things.”
The story broke on Wednesday after TMZ reported that the rapper, born Andre Johnson, was found laying on a North Hollywood sidewalk after he cut off his penis and jumped off a second-floor balcony in a likely suicide attempt.
Originally it was erroneously reported that Johnson went by the rap name Andre Roxx, leaving Wu-experts scratching their heads. He was later identified as Christ Bearer, a member of the California group Northstar, who released their Bobby Digital Presents: Northstar in 2003.
Johnson is now in stable condition according to TMZ, but doctors were unable to reattach his penis.
According to RZA, Christ Bearer was recently released from jail, but he no longer makes music with the rapper. “Christ Bearer is a part of the West Coast Killa Beez, a bunch of young guys that was signed to our company 10 years ago. Wu-Tang, we’re from the East Coast. But we did invest in some young guys to try and help any ‘hood,” he said. “He was a guy from the ‘hood that we gave a shot. I don’t make music with him nowadays. But the story — what he did — is incredible. That sh– sound mythical.”
