Zayn Malik Calls Engagement ‘Cool’! Do Fans Agree?

With one strut down a red carpet, One Direction‘s Zayn Malik and Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards revealed that they are engaged. It all went down at the premiere Tuesday night in London, where Perrie’s new bling was on full display.

A rep for the singers confirmed it to MTV News on Wednesday, the same say Malik opened up about the engagement to Capital FM in the U.K. He said, “It’s cool. Yeah, we’re really happy. It’s cool.”

So, do the Directioners also think the engagement is cool too? Well, the reaction has been mostly positive but also mixed, ahead of 1D’s appearance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday, where they are up for Best Song of the Summer for their upbeat single, “Best Song Ever.”

“Do zayn and perrie think this is some nicholas sparks book they are living in,” @broadwaylirry tweeted, as #CongratsZaynAndPerrie trended on Twitter. @_Elliecharrrr added, “Going to comfort the best friend as she’s going through tough times right now from finding out the Zayn & Perrie engagement.”

Meanwhile other fans knew the twosome had gotten serious after Zayn got a tattoo in Perrie’s likeness earlier this summer. “I still don’t understand why people are so shocked about zayn and perrie sorry but did you not realise it was serious when he got a tattoo?,” @5SOSManchester tweeted.

@newyorkliam added, “i was hoping zayn and perrie would get married or else that tattoo would be rlly awkward.”

Most fans took the news better than one would expect given Zayn’s heartthrob status, sending out a lot of love to the newly engaged couple. But fans had one message for the Little Mix singer. “Perrie, please take good care of zayn for us, you have my whole world in your hands now i trust you xx,” @kidrxuhl1D wrote.

Now, fans are just looking forward to the big day, whenever that is. @IselaaIsela wrote, “if Zayn sings ‘let me love you’ or ‘little things’ to perrie on their wedding day I will collapse and die.”

Will Zayn and Perrie hit up the VMAs together this weekend? Well, fans should tune into the big show when it goes live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Sunday, August 25 to find out. The pre-show kicks off 8 p.m. ET/PT followed by the main show, which goes live from Barclays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
