16 Deleted Scenes That Should Have Made The Final Cut

Deleted scenes are hard to avoid. It doesn’t always come down to a simple need for a shorter movie. Sometimes a scene can slow the pace down too much or not mesh tonally with the other sequences.

No matter the reason why they were cut, there are deleted scenes that are so good that it’s hard to believe anyone could approve removing them. I understand that sometimes there isn’t a choice, but it’s still unfortunate.

Though these great scenes were cut, they live on in the DVD extras and in the post below.

1. Boromir’s Story in “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers”

This flashback sequence lives on in the Extended Edition of “The Two Towers,” but it adds so much to Boromir, Faramir and Denethor that it’s a shame it didn’t make the theatrical cut.

2. The Mouth of Sauron in “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King”

While this sequence ripped straight from J.R.R. Tolkien’s book doesn’t add too much, besides another decapitation for the tally sheet, the creature effects are really cool.

3. Luke Talks to Biggs in “Star Wars”

Sometimes it’s not enough to be told that Luke and Biggs are best buds. This scene from early in “Star Wars” would have established the friendship sooner.

4. Luke Builds His Lightsaber in “Return of the Jedi”

It’s a small thing, but this scene of Luke tinkering with his green-bladed saber would have helped establish him as a Jedi after abandoning his training prematurely.

5. Lupin and Tonks Meet Before the Battle of Hogwarts in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part II”

Read the book, and you’ll say, “My heart is ripped out because Tonks and Lupin are dead, and now Teddy is an orphan.” Watch the movie, and you’ll say, “Oh, that sucks. Those people I can’t have known died. Oh well.” This scene would have brought the two closer together.

6. Jonah Dislikes “Brokeback Mountain” in “Knocked Up” (NSFW)

On top of being hilarious, this scene features some seriously impressive swearing from Jonah Hill.

7. Cap Looks Back in “The Avengers”

Joss Whedon expressed regret about not being able to fit this Captain America scene into his final cut. The ending of “The First Avenger” is devastating, so this would have helped the tonal shift to the lighter team-up movie.

8. Flashback with Matt Smith in “In Bruges”

In this modern crime classic, Brendan Gleeson’s character only mentions his history with Harry (Ralph Fiennes). This deleted scene actually shows us (in graphic detail), complete with a fantastic Fiennes impression from “Doctor Who’s” Matt Smith.

9. Buford Tannen Meets Strickland in “Back to the Future Part III”

Did the “Back to the Future” series need another call-back? No, but I like this one in particular.

10. Briggs Takes Out a Sniper in “Lethal Weapon”

“The movie’s too long for this sh–.” — Richard Donner.

11. Quint Harasses a Child in “Jaws”

The deleted scene where Quint goes to buy piano wire doesn’t have anything to do with the overall story, but I will take any excuse available to get more Robert Shaw.

12. Bill’s Deleted Fight in “Kill Bill”

It’s such a shame that Michael Jai White’s amazing performance as a vengeful Australian didn’t make the theatrical version of “Kill Bill Vol. 2.” At least it’s still on the internet for everyone to enjoy.

13. The Joker Rides the Bus in “The Dark Knight”

Less a deleted scene and more a deleted angle, the shot of Heath Ledger riding away from the exploding hospital is haunting.

14. Meet Sgt. Candy in “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines”

Is this the worst or the best? Hard to say, but it definitely would have injected some life into “Rise of the Machines.”

15. Magneto Does Drag in “X-Men: First Class”

It’s not every day that you get to see Michael Fassbender dressed as a woman, so I can’t help but feel that this scene was a missed opportunity.

16. Wolverine Gets His Costume in “The Wolverine”

Why? Why? Why is this not in the final movie? Why doesn’t Hugh Jackman put it on just for one scene? Why hasn’t he been wearing this the whole time? Why?

Writer/editor for MTV. If it involves cowboys, spies, or hitmen, I’m there. All three would be ideal.
