6 Butterbeer Recipes Even Muggles Can Try

Anyone who has ever read the “Harry Potter” books or seen any of the eight movies chronicling the life of the boy wizard wonder has an acute case of FOMOOB by now. Don’t know what that stands for? Duh: Fear Of Missing Out On Butterbeer. All we ever hear about is Butterbeer this, Butterbeer that, Butterbeer is so great and tasty and delicious and magical.

So, like, when can we try it? The official, J.K. Rowling-sanctioned recipe, a dual layer concoction that’s liquidy on the bottom and foamy on top, is only served at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park, and Florida can only fit so many wizarding wannabes at a time. What’s an unmatriculated Hogwarts hopeful to do?

The answer, fellow Muggles (who have self-sorted into Ravenclaw anyway, thank you very much), is finally here. It’s time for us to make kitchen magic (or Starbucks magic, if that’s the route you decide to go) and whip up some Butterbeer.

Ahead, six Butterbeer recipes even Muggles can enjoy.

1. Hot-n-Sweet

From the Food Network’s Sandra Lee comes a quick, hot version of the drink that will dirty a bunch of dishes so fast you’ll think it’s magic. But this sweet, buttery drink sounds delightful and makes us wish for January.

2. A great way to annoy your barista

Please, in this life, just do us one favor: don’t march up to your Starbucks counter and proudly order a grande Butterbeer. E! dug up the order for a frozen version of the drink off the chain’s secret menu (read: someone just made it up), consisting of creme Frappuccino base, three pumps each of caramel and toffee nut syrup, whipped cream and a caramel drizzle.

3. A way to bug your barista and get diabetes

Another Starbucks “secret recipe,” to be utilized only during red cup season (the most wonderful time of the year). For a grande, this hot version requires steamed whole milk, three pumps each of caramel syrup, toffee nut syrup and cinnamon dolce syrup, topped off with whipped cream and a sprinkling of salted caramel flakes.

4. Just add imitation butter flavor

If you have a bottle of imitation butter flavoring and a stand mixer (or just very sturdy biceps and a strong desire for homemade whipped cream), you’re golden for this cold, two-layered recipe vetted by Mic.com.

5. Buttery deliciousness

If you have some time and a few pans on your hands, give this one a go. The Tablespoon has a very involved recreation of the wizarding world’s beverage of choice, including actual butter.

6. The simple delight

Consider this one our gift to you, the world internet premiere of my own original Butterbeer stand-in, developed during a brief college stint as a barista. It’s simple, available year-round and dangerously caloric. Just ask for a half-and-half steamer (breve, if you’re fancy) or latte with caramel syrup, extra foam scooped on top, and a lattice of caramel syrup to finish. Tastes like magic.*

*Disclaimer: I am not a wizard, nor have I ever been to Hogsmeade. I just like tasty beverages and Harry Potter. A lot.
