All The Reasons ‘Awkward”s Matty McKibben Is Ready For Fatherhood — And All The Reasons He’s Not

If you missed last season’s “Awkwardfinale, the upshot of Matty McKibben‘s dilemma is this: The Palos Hills High School student recently started dating a beautiful new transfer student, she turned out to be a bit of a sociopath and now, she might just be pregnant with his baby. And you thought mid-terms were a drag!

When the show returns next Tuesday, September 23 at 10/9c, Matty may have to deal with the very real possibility that he’ll have to forfeit his soccer uniform for a spit rag, and that diaper duty might soon interfere with final exams. And, truthfully, there are times when we think he’s up to the task, but others in which we can’t imagine anyone less suited to buckle in that finicky car seat.

Below are some points that spell out why Matty is (or isn’t) ready for fatherhood. Check ‘em out, tell us where you stand and be sure to tune in to next week’s premiere!

Why Matty’s READY:

Playing catch would always on the table.
Not only is Matty one of PHHS’ top athletes, he’s the first to jump at any opportunity to shake things up. With Matty as a father, a child wouldn’t be denied a single opportunity and would be encouraged to chase after any dream — no matter how crazy. Plus, his or her jump shot would be perfected by age three.

He’s mighty protective of the ones he loves.
Matty’s had a fair share of drama with Jenna, Jake and his family, but he’s the type of guy who would risk life and limb to protect his love ones, no questions asked. Even after Jenna cheated on him, he still swore he’d stick by her side. Unconditional love from a parent is all any kid can hope for.

He’s got a heart the size of Palos Hills.
Seriously, is there measuring tape long enough?

Why Matty’s NOT READY:

He’s hot and cold.
For all his moments of good-guy greatness — and there are many — he sometimes has a short fuse and has been known to snap when the pressure’s on. Patience is a virtue when it comes to parenting, and we’d be a liiiittle afraid of how Matty would handle a tiny tyke when he or she gets fussy.

Contrarian could be his middle name.
Compromise is king when it comes to raising a child with a partner, and Matty has a tendency to be stubborn and shut out dissenting opinion. Every time Jenna has tried to have an honest talk with her ex, he’s been totally unreceptive, and Matty might need to learn the fine art of making concessions if he wants to make things work with his baby’s mother.

Holding down jobs isn’t his forte.
Matty blew his chance at being a cater-waiter and left his job as a mall’s model by ditching his shift with his middle fingers in the air. Bottom line: Parents have to be providers, and at some point, Matty’s going to have to swallow his pride and do what needs to be done to make that cash.
