Austin Mahone Bringing Fire, Smoke And Lasers To Stage For EMA Kickoff

He’s back! Austin Mahone is ready to take the stage for the first time since being hospitalized last month. The twice-nominated 2013 MTV EMA singer is slated to perform at a special EMA performance live from New York at 7 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday.

And he’s got some big ideas for his return. “I got some outfits I’m working on. It’s gonna be a lot of fun,” the told MTV News. “Hopefully there’s going to be some fire I’ll have behind me, some lasers, some smoke, some cool stuff. I’m pretty excited. It’s gonna be sick.”

Hosted by “Glee” star Darren Criss, Cher Lloyd and Andrew Schulz (“Guy Code”), the Stateside kickoff will feature performances from Fall Out Boy, Jason Derulo, the Wanted and EMA backstage host Ariana Grande.

The 17-year-old was hospitalized last month for a blood clot and extreme inflammation in his throat, as well as severe dehydration. But now he’s on the mend and ready to perform again.

“I mean, for the past two weeks, I’ve been taking it easy. The doctors said don’t be going to crazy, running around and dancing so much because it could easily come back. I had a blood clot in my throat so it could easily come back going 100 percent,” he said. “So for the past two weeks, I’ve just been in my room chilling on YouTube studying performers like Usher, Chris Brown, Bobby Brown, the Temptations. Just so I can, you know, take ideas from them and then next time onstage bring something new to the table.”

On Sunday he is nominated for Best Push as well as the first-ever Artist on the Rise Award.

“It’s amazing because I’ve only been doing this for two years now and it’s amazing how fast everything’s been going. I performed at the VMAs [during the pre-show] and I was on the red carpet and I won the [VMA] award [for Artist to Watch] and it was all so surreal for me,” he said. “Getting to perform at the EMAs and I’m nominated for two awards, this is just like incredible. I couldn’t be asking for anything more amazing.”

The 2013 MTV EMA take place on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
