Check Out Devonte Hynes’ Bummer-tastic ‘Palo Alto’ Track

by 06/02/14

Get your dark ‘n’ twisted teenage angst on Monday (June 2) with a new track from James Franco’s “Palo Alto” soundtrack, courtesy of Devonté Hynes.

The soundtrack for the film — featuring Hynes’ first-ever score — is out today digitally and physically on August 5, with Hynes’ single “April’s Bathroom Bummer” streaming right now.

Replete with tense percussion and plaintive horns, the jam is reminiscent of Air’s soundtrack for “The Virgin Suicides,” evoking a kind of desperate-yet-mystical sadness. Hynes wrote and performed the entire score for the film, which is based on a series of linked stories by James Franco in which a teenage girl (Emma Roberts) begins an illicit affair with her soccer coach (Franco).

The soundtrack also includes tracks from Robert Schwartzman (Rooney), Coconut Records (Jason Schwartzman) and Nat & Alex Wolff, one half of which — Nat — also appears in the Gia Coppola-directed film.

‘A Clockwork Orange’ Author’s Reps Are Into Lana Del Rey’s Ultraviolence

by 05/30/14

Lana Del Rey is getting ready to give us all a little of the old Ultraviolence come June 16 when her new album drops, and the International Anthony Burgess Foundation, for one, is pretty stoked.

“We’ve definitely heard about Lana’s choice to title her record Ultraviolence,” Clare Preston-Pollitt, events and marketing officer at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation, told MTV News. “We picked up on it some time ago and we were intrigued by it … It’s fantastic that ‘A Clockwork Orange’ is still providing inspiration to such a diverse range of artists around the world over 50 years since its original publication.”

Del Rey’s new disc cribs its name from Anthony Burgess’ most popular novel, for those who didn’t spend their lunch period in high school reading in the corner (or who haven’t stepped foot in a HS English class).

Although we’re not sure yet how much the book influenced the album’s lyrics (although we could easily see Alex cast as the dark-as-dark lover in “Shades Of Cool”), the title itself is a term coined by Burgess himself meaning … just what it sounds like. Serious violence leading to serious hurts.

“Burgess was a prolific writer and musician who described himself as belonging to the ‘fraternity of the renegades,’” Preston-Pollitt said. “He was a creative force, using his writing, especially ‘A Clockwork Orange,’ to examine the nature of good and evil and the importance of free will. It would be interesting to hear what impact the book (or the film) ...

Is Iggy Azalea Is Having The Fanciest Week Ever?

by 05/30/14

As weeks go, Iggy Azalea isn’t having the worst one. Now, I don’t want to jinx anything — as there are still roughly two days left until the week re-ups — but she could, in fact, be having the best collection of seven days yet.

Check out our very scientific reasoning below:

She Bested The Beatles

On this week’s Billboard Hot 100, not only did Iggy Azalea nab the top two spots — with “Fancy” and Ariana Grande collab “Problem” — she also joined the ranks of the Beatles.

Yup, Azalea’s first two Hot 100 hits have climbed to #1 and #2 simultaneously, a feat not achieved since 1964 when the Beatles charted with “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “She Loves You.”

Fancy indeed.

She’s Part Of The ‘Problem’

Speaking of Grande’s chart-topping hit, the video for “Problem” drops today, featuring Iggy and Big Sean.

Despite the song’s title, we have no problem with that.

She Buckled Into This Outfit

And This One

Someone Drew Her This Awesome Fan Art

She Also Hung Out In A Car With RuPaul

Speaking Of Cars… This Happened

And Just… The Hair

Kanye’s ‘Yeezus 2′: Could This Leak Be A Sneak Peek?

by 05/30/14

A snippet of what is purported to be a new Kanye West track, titled “Black Bruce Wayne,” made its way to the Web Friday (May 30), leading fans to wonder: Could this be a peek at Yeezus 2?

There are a lot of rumors floating around the Web with regard to the snippet — that it features 2 Chainz, that someone paid $500 for the leak — but as we seasoned Web denizens know, rumors are rumors.

While we wait for Kanye to react to the leak while on his honeymoon — it probably won’t be long now — can we all just appreciate the copious amount of French Ye drops in this track?

Oh la la!

Watch LeVar Burton Explain The Glory That Is A Double Rainbow

by 05/30/14

LeVar Burton certainly knows a lot about doubling. Not only has he raised double the goal for his “Reading Rainbow” Kickstarter, he’s also in a very informative video explaining how double rainbows are made manifest.

While the rest of us are more likely to stand, agog, exclaiming, “Double rainbow all the way across the sky!” when we see a ‘bow-times-two, the “Reading Rainbow” host knows what’s up. (Pun intended).

Burton was a special guest on YouTube series “SciShow” this week, where he gave a very detailed breakdown on what makes some rainbows see double.

The appearance comes on the heels of Burton and Co. surpassing their $1 million Kickstarter goal, launched to bring “Reading Rainbow” to the Web and schools around the country.

Currently, the team has raised more than $2 million. Yup, it’s not just butterflies in the sky that are going twice as high.

Weatherbox Don’t Want To Hang With You In Their ‘Pagan Baby’ Video

by 05/29/14

Weatherbox‘s disconcerting new track, “Pagan Baby,” has got itself a similarly disconcerting new video.

What appears to be your standard live clip — dudes playing instruments in black and white! what fun! — soon morphs into something else altogether as the vid progresses. The camera pulls back to reveal that the performance is merely a video on a computer screen, watched placidly by some unidentified, beer-swilling man.

The stark imagery goes pretty well with the anti-social lyrics, belied by the poppy beat. “Nice to meet you/ Now go away/ I wanna be alone,” sings frontman Brian Warren.

The band’s new LP, Flies In All Directions, is replete with that kind of growling darkness, which catalogs the group’s — and Warren’s — troubles over the years since their 2006 debut.

“I was convinced of awful delusions,” Warren told Buzzworthy of that period. “I’d see men in disturbing prosthetics, caricatures of my friends but sharp teeth and arched eyebrows. At another point I thought I was a ghost a million years in the future, where a holographic overlay of 2006 obscured reality and a semi-hostile robotic intelligence had replaced all of humanity.”

‘Reading Rainbow’ Kickstarts $1 Million In 11 Hours

by 05/29/14

If you were a child sometime during the last 30 years or so, the refrain, “Butterfly in the sky…” will likely do nostalgic things to your head.

Sadly, that jam became nothing but a memory in 2009 when educational program “Reading Rainbow” went off the air, but now, thanks to a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, it’s time for a “take a look, it’s in a book” singalong.

It only took 11 hours for the “Bring Reading Rainbow Back” Kickstarter to hit and surpass its goal of $1 million, with more than 40,000 backers kicking in cash.

Obviously, a lot of folks have been missing the show, which saw host LeVar Burton embarking on reading adventures.

Now that the team has hit their goal, they’re primed to bring back the ethos of “Reading Rainbow” — in a way befitting today’s world.

“‘Reading Rainbow’ needs to come back for today’s kids — but what does that mean?” Burton said in the campaign’s video. “Thirty minutes on TV was yesterday’s world. In today’s world, today’s kids want today’s technology.”

After launching an iPad app in 2012, LeVar and Co. are primed to bring the show to a wider audience — those who might not have tablets at home — by taking “Reading Rainbow” to the Web, complete with an expansive digital library of books and video field trips. Check out this way fun one below about recycling:

LeVar and the rest of the team will use cash raised to launch that Web platform, as well ...

Cherub’s Bouncy Summer Jam ‘Doses & Mimosas’ Is Actually About ‘Self-Loathing’

by 05/28/14

I don’t know if you’ve seen Cherub’s video for their hit single “Doses & Mimosas” yet, but it’s way, way ballsy. Like, literally, you guys.

From golden underwear to ass-less chaps, electro-pop duo Jordan Kelley and Jason Huber show fans a whole new side of themselves in this video — if by “side” you mean basically every inch of flesh and every tongue-in-cheek tattoo (see if you can spot the mer-kitten lactating into a dog dish!).

Yup, they play strippers — and, yup, they take their roles very seriously. If you define “seriously” as romping around with alligators and donning pants-less chef uniforms while staring at boobs.

The guys told us more about their inspiration for the video — spoiler: they watched “Mike Magic” on loop for two days — as well as the dark side of the bouncy summer anthem.

Check it out below:

This Little Skater Girl Has More Willpower Than You

by 05/28/14

What have you done today? Probably nothing. Our lives are mostly replete with aimless meandering, all culminating in the Big Sleep.

Well, here’s one little girl who will not go gently: 9-year-old skater Sabre Norris, who does not know the meaning of the word “quit.”

Check out her skate story below, as well as a video of her mastering her favorite trick.

“My skating all started because I wasn’t allowed to get a bike because we don’t have a garage. So my mum bought us skateboards instead. I started from rolling down my dad’s business car park. I’ve been skating for about 3 years.

“My favorite trick is a 540. I watched Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins do it on the internet, and I just had to do it. That was my 75th attempt of the day. Every time I tried one and didn’t land it, I put a rock on the table. It ended up being my 75th rock. I was frothing. I did some 720s, too. Not proper. I called it 540 to revert to splat. I didn’t cry though.

“My goal is to do 100 of them before this Saturday. I’m up to 75. I still can’t ride a bike, but I can do a 540.”
