Kurt Vile’s Philadelphia Mural Was Defaced Because People Suck

by 9 mins ago

Last year, guitar music god Kurt Vile released the excellent record Wakin’ On A Pretty Daze accompanied by a beautiful mural in his hometown of Philadelphia. The mural served as the album’s artwork, but since people are generally terrible, a man began painting over the commissioned piece this weekend claiming it “attracted graffiti.”

Philadelphia resident Najeeb Sheikh caught the man defacing the mural and angrily posted about it on his Instagram. “So this is the ignorant piece of sh-t that took it upon himself to buff the @steveespopowers [sic] Kurt Ville [sic] mural. When I asked if he knew it was a commissioned piece by a world renown artist he said he did and he didn’t give a sh-t. He claimed it attracted graffiti to the neighborhood!”

The Metro Philadelphia paper picked up the story, given that the mural was painted by world-renown artist Steve Powers. Jane Golden, the executive director of the city’s Mural Arts Program called the loss tragic. “I think the big point here is that it’s really sad to lose a work of art,” she said.

Najeeb wasn’t the only one who was horrified by the defacing—Kurt Vile himself took to Facebook to express his sadness and disappointment. “Bummer of a day yesterday,” Kurt wrote. “The mural that was painted for the cover of Wakin’ was defaced. We’re all working on plans to have it redone and updated.”

Here’s the original mural and cover art for Vile’s album:

‘Do The Right Thing’ Helped President Obama Impress Michelle On Their First Date

by 39 mins ago

Tomorrow will be the 25th anniversary of Spike Lee’s monumental film “Do The Right Thing,” so naturally, he threw a party in Brooklyn to celebrate. Despite the star-studded guest list—Dave Chappelle, Public Enemy’s Chuck D, and Erykah Badu—a video message from the nation’s first couple took the cake.

Lee played it before the film both at the Bed Stuy screening, and later, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art screening. Who can blame him, a presidential co-sign is clutch.

President Obama and his now wife, Michelle, explained that “Do The Right Thing” was the movie they went to see on their first official date. They will celebrate their 24th year of marriage in October of this year, but in the video the couple recall the details of their first date.

“‘Do The Right Thing’ was actually the first thing we saw together on our first official date,” Michelle explained. “He was trying to show me his sophisticated side by selecting an independent filmmaker.”

“I took her to this new movie everybody was talking about directed by a guy that not that many people had heard of,” Barack said. “But it was supposed to be pretty good.”

Michelle agreed: “It ended up being a pretty good movie—really great!”

“So Spike, thank you for helping me impress Michelle,” Obama joked. “And thank you for telling a powerful story. Today, I’ve got a few more grey hairs than I did back in 1989. You don’t look like Mookie anymore. But ‘Do the Right Thing’ still holds up ...

Miley Cyrus Has A New Puppy!

by 28 mins ago

When Miley‘s Alaskan Klee Kai puppy Floyd suddenly died earlier this year, all her fans could relate to her heartbreak. Miley was in the middle of her Bangerz tour at the time, so she didn’t even get to say goodbye to her favorite puppy.

But now, she’s finally healed enough to love again. She posted on Twitter and Instagram that Emu, a new Shetland sheepdog puppy, is here to stay. His full name is Emu Coyne Cyrus, which might be a nod to Cyrus’ friendship with Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips.

Miley is probably clarifying because back in April, her mom tried to replace the puppy with another dog named Moonie. Soon after that though, Miley decided she wasn’t ready and gave the dog away.

But it looks like Miley is fully healed now—she’s been decorating pictures of Emu with her signature, over-the-top style.

She even took a shower with her new pup…

But that doesn’t mean she isn’t still honoring the memory of Floyd.

We can’t wait to see more cute puppy pics of Emu! Here’s the full post she wrote about Emu on her Instagram:

“time to start making Emu accounts smilers. Hes [sic] here and here to stay”

Ariana Grande Announces New Album ‘My Everything,’ Teases ‘Break Free’ Snippet

by 6 mins ago

Ariana Grande loves using Twitter to interact with her fans, and tonight, she used it to announce her new album’s title and release date. The album is called My Everything and it will be out on August 25th.

And there’s still more!

She also tweeted a link to an exclusive interview with Ryan Seacrest, where she talks about everything leading up to the record, and how at first, she wasn’t going to include “Problem” on it.

Ariana shared that if her fans pre-order the record, they’ll get access to a stream of her performance at the iHeartRadio Ultimate Pool Party last night, which of course, includes renditions of some brand new songs live for the first time.

She also told Seacrest that there will be another collaboration with Big Sean on the record for a song called “Best Mistake.”

This news came right after she decided to share a snippet of the new single she’d been teasing. “Break Free” is a collaboration with Zedd, the superpower EDM producer behind “Clarity” featuring another of our favorite popstars Foxes , which won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2013.

She’s been teasing the single’s sci-fi tilt, and the brief clips she posted on Instagram reveals the song’s big, synthy pop sheen while Ariana scrambles in a white futuristic backdrop.

And don’t forget, we’re bringing back TRL just for Ariana. It’s going to be a good summer.

Tywin Lannister Is the Perfect Ugly, Scary Vampire In The ‘Dracula Untold’ Trailer

by 12 mins ago

Spoiler alert: This Dracula story is not the Bram Stoker Victorian version. It is an attempt at retelling of Dracula’s origins, turning them into a fantastic, action-packed plot set in a medieval backdrop.

“Dracula Untold” will star Luke Evans as Vlad Tepes, a man who becomes a vampire in an effort to save his family from the greedy sultan Mehmed, played by Dominic Cooper.

But who’s the chilling monster that helps Tepes transform into a blood-sucking superhero? None other than Charles Dance, or Tywin Lannister for those still pining over the end of this season of “Games of Thrones.”

But there are no coffins in the trailer, and in the trailer, Tepes encounters the ancient vampire Tywin Lannister in a cave that looks vaguely like it belongs in Middle Earth.

Apparently, the team behind Dracula isn’t at all afraid to take from other successful productions—the trailer is soundtracked by Lorde‘s cover of Tears for Fears‘ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” that was recorded for “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” MTV premiered Lorde’s cover of the track back in November, and while it certainly matches the film’s ominous plot, it’s still an oddly recycled choice.

“Dracula Untold” will be released on October 17, because duh, two weeks before Halloween is definitely vampire season.

Here’s Why Amy Adams Is The Classiest First Class Passenger

by 3 mins ago

Amy Adams is making headlines this weekend, but it’s not for one of her movies. Instead, the actress is in the spotlight for giving up her first class seat on a plane to a soldier sitting in coach. The actress privately requested the change be made, but Jemele Hill, co-host of ESPN2′s “Numbers Never Lie,” was also on board and tweeted about Adams’ generosity.

Adams was traveling from Detroit to Los Angeles, and despite her best efforts to keep the sweat swap private, she was met by reporters upon landing.

“I didn’t do it for attention for myself I did it for attention for the troops,” she said to an Inside Edition reporter. The actress was raised in a military home, but this act of respect is just another reason to love her.

Did Justin Bieber Post Some New Music On His Instagram Last Night?

by 15 mins ago

It seems like Justin Bieber never stops working. While most of us would be relaxing and having fun on a typical Friday night, instead, it looks like Bieber was focused on perfecting dance moves to a brand new song! The singer shared two clips of himself flanked by two backup dancers breaking it down to snippets of electronic, auto-tuned pop.

Nice moves, Justin.

The singer has been branching off musically in a lot of ways lately, and from the sounds of it this new song will have some huge EDM overtones. Bieber’s rehearsal outfit is flawless too— a light grey sweatsuit with hashtags on the front legs of his sweatpants.

We’re going to take that as a subtle shout out to Twitter and all the #Beliebers. Plus, this gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “hashtag sweatpants.”

Maybe Justin will drop this new track soon and give us a huge new song of the summer.

Prince Trolls The Internet By Writing A Song Based On A Meme

by 27 mins ago

Oh Purple One, your views on social media have changed so dramatically! Once, Prince (The Artist) wouldn’t deign to do anything on the World Wide Web, but no one is safe from the lure of the Internet. Not only does he now tweet at @3rdEyeGirl and Instagram, but he is working on a song that’s inspired by the #ThisCouldBeUsButYouPlayin meme.

Yes, it is Prince who will bring this unstoppable meme to life.

When the craze hit its peak, one of the most popular photos was this shot from Purple Rain of Prince and Apollonia cruising on a motorcycle. Although the photo that Prince tweeted is slightly different, the song snippet he tweeted along with it plainly features the line “This could be us, but you playing.”

The dropbox link has been overloaded because so many people have been trying to download the snippet, but hopefully Prince will grace us with the full version soon.

He is working on a new album called PLECTRUMELECTRUM with his band 3rdEyeGirl, but he also recently said he is working on a new Prince record as well. No word on when either of this will be released, or which one might include this new meme song.

While we’re on the subject, here’s some other awesome examples of the meme that never ends.
