The ‘Zombieland’ Sequel Has A Writer

by 5 mins ago

Five long years ago, “Zombieland” shuffled and chewed its way into our hearts — and for five long years, we’ve been waiting for the sequel that director Ruben Fleischer enthusiastically promised us was totally in the works.

After all this time, it seemed like it might never happen. But today, the sounds of undead moaning can at last be heard emanating from Hollywood with renewed vigor! According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Zombieland 2″ is finally moving forward. Sony has officially tapped “Godzilla” scribe Dave Callaham to work the script, with Fleischer overseeing.

After so many years of stagnation on this project (including an abortive attempt at an Amazon-led TV series last year), it’s unclear whether they’ll still be able to bring back the whole cast from the first film as originally planned — particularly Emma Stone, who’s gone from new kid on the block to mega-star in the years since she co-starred in “Zombieland.” But one thing’s for sure: as long as Fleischer returns to direct, we can eagerly look forward to another sure-to-be cult favorite film, and one with lots and lots of 3D projectile zombie splatter all over the camera. Hooray!

A 15 Year-Old Boy Penned The Perfect Response To Emma Watson’s Speech On Feminism

by 6 mins ago

Emma Watson’s gorgeous UN speech on feminism has already garnered the support of many manly celebs, but our favorite response to her call to action has to be this one: a letter to the editor, penned by 15 year-old Ed Holtom of St. Albans School in Hertfordshire, and published in English newspaper The Telegraph.

Holtom wrote the letter after being “disappointed” by his male classmates’ responses to Watson’s speech; his op-ed began to go viral after English actor Nicholas Pegg tweeted out a pic of the letter, calling it “magnificent.”

In his letter, Holtom echoed the actress’s thoughts about gender stereotyping and its harmful effects on both men and women. He wrote, “If we want equality, it will take more effort than paying women the same as men, or giving women equal opportunities. We must stop pressuring each other to fit stereotypes which more often than not leaves us feeling repressed and unable to express ourselves. We must not let gender define us.”

Although famous men of all stripes have been speaking out in support of Watson’s #HeForShe campaign, it’s a different kind of triumph entirely for an ordinary guy to lend his voice to the cause. Ed Holtom, we salute you! Here’s hoping some of his fellow dudes follow suit, and keep the word rolling.

The Conclusion Of The Laser Cat Yearbook Photo Saga Is Better Than You Ever Imagined

by 29 mins ago

If you spent any time in the general vicinity of the internet during the month of September, you are undoubtedly aware of the plight of Draven Rodriguez. He’s the Schenectady High School student who united us all in a cause worth fighting for: obtaining permission to use this photo as his senior portrait.

The response from the internet was immediate and passionate.
“YES! LET THERE BE LASER CATS!” we cried.

Even Kesha took up the mantle, tweeting her support of Mr. Rodriguez and his furry friend Mr. Bigglesworth. But when MTV News caught up with Draven a couple weeks ago, he confirmed that the administration would not relent — only compromise. The photo would be published somewhere in the yearbook, but alas, the graduating senior would not be able to use it as his official portrait.

Don’t worry, though. This story has a happy ending:

The other half of the compromise: a photo session featuring not just Draven and his beautiful cat, but also school principal Diane Wilkinson and her chihuahua, Vivienne.

As reported by Buzzfeed, this picture will go in the yearbook to raise awareness for the ASPCA and rescue pets like the two pictured here. It is, dare we say, even better than the original. For lo, the internet cried out for laser cats, and the universe in its infinite power chose instead to bestow upon us both laser cats and laser dogs! It’s official: we have everything we ever wanted.

Oh, except a ...

‘The Boxtrolls’: The Reviews Are In

by 4 mins ago

Hide yo kids, hide yo wife, and especially hide yo finest cheeses: “The Boxtrolls” is out today, bringing the titular lactose-loving trolls and their wildly askew hometown of Cheesebridge to life on the big screen.

The movie already has lots of positive buzz going, having gotten plenty of early attention for its charming animation and socially-progressive trailers. But now that it’s been let out of the box, what do critics have to say? Below, we round up some reviews.

Standing ovation for the animation.
“[It's] a wonderful world, full of Rube Goldberg contraptions below and colorful Dickensian squalor and excess above.” — Stephen Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer

“Like much of the best animation, ‘The Boxtrolls’ is above all a marvel of craft. Just before the final credits, we catch a glimpse of the labor involved — a fast, funny riff on just how painstaking the work of creating a kinetic stop-motion universe can be. And yet it looks like child’s play.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times

And big ups for the writing, too.
“The dialogue is snappy and witty, especially the unexpectedly shrewd observations of Mr. Pickles, and the animation throughout etched in lovingly uproarious detail.” — Bruce DeMara, The Toronto Star

Parental advisory: You might like it more than your kids.
“Though produced by an American animation studio, “The Boxtrolls” is about as British as movies get. Its humor is morbid, its characters grotesque, its story driven by themes of class. …Imaginative but very weird, more ...

‘Gone Girl’ Reviews Are Already Rolling In

by 42 mins ago

If you’ve been waiting with bated breath for Amy Dunne to finally disappear on the big screen, then the first flush of reviews for “Gone Girl” should kick up your anticipation an extra notch.

The movie won’t officially release until next month, but a smattering of critics have already weighed in — and for the most part, they’ve got good, good things to say. Below, we round up a few key opinions from the film’s first round with an audience.

True romance? More like a too-true romance.
“The movie is phenomenally gripping—although it does leave you queasy, uncertain what to take away on the subject of men, women, marriage, and the possibility of intimacy from the example of such prodigiously messed-up people.” — David Edelstein, Vulture

Ben Affleck is ready for his closeup.
“As Nick, Affleck gives what may be the most natural performance of his career. He’s confident without being cocky, charming without being smarmy. You get the sense that his cruel season under the media’s magnifying glass with J. Lo wasn’t entirely for naught.” — Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly

And more importantly, we need to talk about Rosamund Pike.
“Pike, so often a decorative supporting player, delivers a career-defining performance here. She’s a revelation, showing a complete command over Amy – with any luck Gone Girl should bag her an Oscar nomination come awards season.” — Simon Reynolds, Digital Spy

A minority opinion: the adaptation lacks the bite of the book.
“It’s not just that Gone Girl lacks the ...

Where Are The Stars Of ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000′ Now?

by 6 mins ago

Once upon a time, back in the halcyon days of TV when the Syfy network still spelled it “Sci-Fi,” Saturday mornings were spent in outer space: nestled in the seats of a satellite cinema, watching the worst films ever made with a pair of neurotic robots.

The show was “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” and during its glorious heyday, it enjoyed successful runs on Comedy Central and Syfy, spawned its own feature film, and wormed its way into the hearts of millions of fans for whom the most important mark of a quality movie experience was the small, comforting silhouette of Tom Servo’s gumball-machine-shaped head up front. The premise — one human man trapped in space, forced to watch terrible movies by an evil scientist whose sole goal was to drive his subject insane — was just a setup for the show’s main trio to do what they did best, which was mercilessly make fun of stupid movies until viewers at home were laughing hard enough to wet themselves.

Sadly, “Mystery Science Theater 3000″ was cancelled forever in 1999. But the main men (and one lady) who made it famous live on, to the great relief of fans everywhere. Here’s where you can catch up with them now.

Watch Elizabeth Banks Read ‘Mockingjay’ And Feel All The Feels

by 1 min ago

If you’ve read “Mockingjay,” the final tome in the “Hunger Games” trilogy, then you know what’s coming in this video from Elizabeth “Effie Trinket” Banks. The supporting star of the “Hunger Games” films took to Facebook to demonstrate the six-stage process of reading Suzanne Collins’ work: beginning with excitement, pausing for fear and sorrow, and concluding with the part where, yep, it was the best book ever.

Although it seems like one or two stages might be missing from Elizabeth’s “Mockingjay” process — most notably the one wherein you hurl the book across the room and sob for a minimum of three hours — she’s clearly got this whole reading thing nailed down.
