Of Course Drake And Johnny Manziel Took A ‘Draft Day’ Pic

by 05/09/14

NFL Draft day may have been a little stressful for Johnny Manziel, but the college football great was finally picked at 22 in the first round by the Cleveland Browns, and everything worked out.

Of course, Johnny Football did the money dance on his way to the podium and later that night, he partied with Drake and the rapper’s OVO fam. If you remember, Drizzy dropped his “Draft Day” track last month and dropped a key shout-out to the top prospect, so we all saw this one coming!

How Did Tyga Vs. Lil Durk Turn Into A Rap Battle Royale?

by 05/08/14

Tyga and Lil Durk started the week with a run-of-the-mill rap battle, but now, the one-on-one verbal joust has turned into a full-blown battle royale. Game, Chief Keef, L.E.P. Bogus Boys and very-much incarcerated Bump J are all involved, one way or another.

So how did we get here?

According to Durk, Tyga stopped responding to his texts for a planned collaboration, so the newly crowned XXL freshman threw a jab at T-Raww on Meek Mill’s “Chiraq” track on Saturday. It only took Tyga a few days to release his response in full, but he didn’t go in alone.

In a surprising twist, Game joined Tyga on “Chiraq to LA” and delivered a scathing verse directed at Durk. It was electric and drew applause from Chief Keef, who responded to an MTV News tweet by posting the cover art for Game and Tyga’s dis track on his social media account.

The Keef tweet (and Instagram post) drew a line in the sand for Durk. “Sosa posted tyga and game diss on ig ……dats sayin f–chiraq,” he tweeted about his fellow Chicagoan.

Hope you’re still following us, because it’s about to get even more complicated.

Game used a divide-and-strategy in his “Chiraq to LA.” Not only did the Compton MC down Durk, he also shouted out a number of Chicago rap and street figures, except when he mistakenly saluted L.E.P. Bogus Boys as the “L.E.D. Bogus Boys.”

The slight didn’t sit well with L.E.P. rapper G Count, who dropped a dis ...

Hold Up, 2 Chainz Says Three 6 Mafia Started The ‘Migos Flow’

by 05/07/14

When Migos dropped their 2013 hit “Versace,” the Atlanta trio captivated the rap world with an ear-catching rhyme delivery that has gone on to influence the likes of Drake, J. Cole, Meek Mill and Young Jeezy.

The “Migos flow,” as it has been dubbed, is a start-and-stop rap pattern where lyrics are doled out in digestible rhyme triplets. While Migos member Quavo gets a ton of credit for popularizing the trend, 2 Chainz would argue that the style actually started with 1990s Memphis rap luminaries Three 6 Mafia.

“Look at my car, how did it get on dem sixes/ This flow come from Drizzy, he got it from Migos, they got it from Three Six,” Chainz raps on “Trap Back,” a song from his Freebase EP, which he dropped online on Tuesday.

“There’s a certain delivery that they brought to the game that people started snacking on, that was something that derived from a Memphis flow period,” Chainz told MTV News about the flow, when he sat with us to discuss the new project.

Ever since Quavo popularized the pattern last year, the flow has become a go-to for a ton of notable MCs known for their own innovations. Drake employed the distinct rhyme triplets on the “Versace” remix, as well as his own solo track “The Language.” J. Cole used it briefly on Justin Timberlake’s “TKO” remix and Young Jeezy added his own twist to the trend on Rocko’s “Which 1 U Workin’.”

Take A Listen To This New Wu-Tang Snippet, It May Be Your Only Chance

by 05/07/14

Wu-Tang Clan is currently in a stand-off, and while there is no update on the crew’s planned reunion album, there is, at least, a new morsel of unreleased music.

On Tuesday, Forbes.com released “Wu-Tang Clan’s Secret Album Unveiled: Once Upon A Time In Marrakech,” a 13-minute documentary centered around the making of Once Upon A Time in Shaolin. This particular LP was recorded in happier times and is different from the tumultuous A Better Tomorrow, which has placed Wu-members RZA and Raekwon at odds.

The plan is to press up only one copy of Once Upon A Time, sell it to the highest bidder and place the music in a museum exhibition where fans can come and take a listen for a fee. Until then, we can fast forward to the 8:50 mark of the Forbes doc and listen to a snippet of a Ghostface Killah and Cher verse.

2 Chainz Reveals He Quit Syrup

by 05/06/14

2 Chainz used to call himself the Codeine Cowboy, but now those days are apparently over because the star rapper says he’s quit drinking lean.

“I don’t even drank no more,” the “No Lie” MC told MTV News last Wednesday, in the midst of explaining the lyrics from his new EP Freebase, which dropped online on Monday.

The revelation came in the form of a tangent. First, Chainz was trying to explain to us how the rap flow associated with popular rap trio Migos comes from Memphis pioneers Three Six Mafia. While saluting the new generation of rappers and noting all of the drugs that they glorify, like Molly and Xanax, Deuce told us about the change he made with his own habits.

“I haven’t drunk since New Year’s Eve; that was my New Year’s resolution,” he said. “You know that I have stomach issues and everything, so for me, I’m trying to get off of all medicine dealing with my stomach. I take medicine every day that people don’t know about. So for me, it wasn’t just about me enjoying or — basically if you do too much of anything, it’s abusive.”

Lean, syrup or drank are all just slang terms for the addictive mixture of a soft drink, plus promethazine and codeine-based cough syrup. Rappers like Lil Wayne, A$AP Rocky and Mac Miller have all been linked to the recreational drug and 2 Chainz himself has got into quite a bit of legal trouble because of syrup.

In June 2012, Tity Boi ...

Game Confuses Lil Durk With Dirk Nowitzki On Tyga’s Dis Track

by 05/06/14

Lil Durk just made the 2014 XXL Freshman cover and Dirk Nowitzki is an NBA champion, but Game can’t tell the difference between the two guys.

On Tuesday (May 6) morning, Tyga dropped his Lil Durk dis song “Chiraq to LA,” but it’s the song’s co-star, Game, who steals the show. Over the course of an almost-four-minute verse, Game takes aim at the Chicago newcomer as well as longtime adversary 40 Glocc.

“Tyga hit me like, ‘Durk dissin’/ Dirk Nowitzki? Durk who, n—a?,” Game raps humorously, purposely confusing the rookie rapper with the Dallas Mavericks basketball star.

Game also volleys shots at 40 Glocc, who he’s been going back and forth with ever since they had a fist-fight back in 2012. “Talk about my kids on Instagram/ N—a must wanna get his ass socked again,” he raps.

The Durk/Tyga beef started when the XXL freshman threw shots at T-Raww on Meek Mill’s version of Nicki Minaj’s “Chiraq.” According to Durk, he launched the verbal attack after Tyga stopped responding to his text messages about a planned collaboration.

Durk said the Young Money spitter asked him to rework an offensive lyric about the mother of Tyga’s child, Blacc Chyna. Durk agreed to make the edit but only if Tyga agreed to work with him on a song. Apparently the collaboration never happened.

On Sunday, Tyga released a snippet of “Chiraq to LA” and then dropped the full version on his SoundCloud page early this morning. “Know some Hoover n—as that’s down to ride ...

2 Chainz Sold Drugs To His ‘Loved Ones’ And Still Has A Hard Time Talking About It

by 05/05/14

For 2 Chainz, the road to rap stardom has been a long and winding one. The charismatic swag champ has plenty of life experience under his belt, some of which is hard for him to put into words.

On “Freebase,” the title track from Chainz’s new EP, which will drop on Monday (May 5) at 7 p.m. ET on LiveMixtapes.com, the ATL rap king dives deep into his storied street life and makes some pretty startling revelations.

“Sold drugs to my loved ones and it’s hard for me to admit it/ The first time I saw a crack pipe was in my parent’s kitchen,” he raps.

“That’s probably gonna always be hard for me to talk about,” Chainz told MTV News on Wednesday in an hour-long interview.

Chainz wouldn’t say which “loved ones” he sold drugs to, instead he measured his words carefully, trying to explain how he has come to terms with the self-inflicted horror.

“Is it a sin,” he asked rhetorically, before his voice trailed off. “I just be praying to God.”

“Would you want your loved one to go out in the streets and just deal with what’s going on out there, Deal with people that don’t have the real thing? Deal with robberies,” Chainz continued, setting off another set of questions with no answer. “Or would you just rather do it? Or are you being selfish by you supplying it? It’ll drive you crazy.”

Chainz knows that for the most part his fans have come to expect a distinct brand of ...

Tyga And Lil Durk’s Rap Beef Really Escalated Quickly

by 05/05/14

Tyga isn’t really known for his rap beefs, but the YMCMB spitter isn’t going to let Lil Durk‘s latest dis go unanswered either.

On Saturday, Meek Mill, Shy Glizzy and Durk released a new track, using Nicki Minaj and Lil Herb’s dark and bassy “Chiraq” beat. Over the murderous instrumental, Durk aimed a few bars at the Young Money rapper spitting: “Heard Tyga sneak dissin’ on me, tell them thot bitches I’m not right/ Tyga only got one name, but that n—a ain’t got one stripe.”

The very next day, T-Raww hopped on Instagram and dropped a 15-second snippet of his response. “Who the f–k is Lil Durk?/ I dust you like ashin’ purp,” he rhymes over the same “Chiraq” beat.

It didn’t take long for Durk to respond, sending shots on Twitter shortly after Tyga’s audio surfaced. “Everytime a n—a rap beef he get clapped up in a couple weeks ig comments and a couple tweets Location on we can go and meet #chiraq,” he messaged on the social networking site.

According to Durk, the whole beef started after Tyga previewed a song that Durk recorded with Chris Brown and French Montana titled “Get That Money.”

On the track, Durk spit a line about Tyga’s lady Blac Chyna, a line that Tyga took some offense to and asked Durk to change. The Chicago rapper says he agreed to make the change only if Tyga did a collaboration with him, a condition Tyga accepted. Durk, however, began to get annoyed after the ...
