Birdman On Big Tymers Performance: ‘We Still Go Hard’

Birdman passed through the “RapFix Live” set Wednesday (August 23) to reveal that he’s put the wheels in motion to bring about a classic Cash Money reunion with super-producer Mannie Fresh signing on to be part of the upcoming Big Tymers album project.

Earlier this year, Birdman told MTV that the resurrection of the Big Tymers would not include Mannie Fresh, whose club-oriented beats helped the Cash Money movement smash through to the mainstream around the turn of the last millennium. Instead, it was announced that Drake, Stunna and Lil Wayne would be stepping into the fold. But Friday (August 23), during MTV’s All Access VMA live stream, Birdman announced to Sway that he’d had a change of heart. Asked whether they’d hit the studio together yet, Baby said, “Fresh been on the road but I’m looking forward to it in about another week. We gonna go to Miami and start getting to it.”

Looking back on the glory days of the Big Tymers, who first went platinum with 2000’s I Got That Work album, Birdman said, “It’s crazy, I haven’t worked with Fresh in like almost 15 years, man, and about at least 13 for sure. I haven’t been on a stage with him in 10, 12 years, so it feels so different.”

Birdman added that he’s confident the timeless Cash Money chemistry is still there. Talking about teaming up onstage with not just Mannie Fresh but Hot Boys members Lil Wayne and Juvenile at the BMI awards in New York City, he said, “I really couldn’t believe it was happening like that. But at the same time, when I look at it, the body of work we put in, that can’t never be replaced, it can’t be duplicated. I mean we worked hard from the start and we still go harder. I feel all that.”

Routing back to his upcoming studio session with Mannie Fresh, which will see the original Big Tymers duo back in creative cahoots, Birdman predicated that the vibe will soon be like old times. “I know we gonna bring great energy in the room ’cause he got ’em,” he said. “Fresh a genius, he definitely a genius.”

Keep it locked to the VMA All Access live stream for more “RapFix Live” on Saturday!
