Can Kevin Hart Reclaim The Box Office Crown From ‘LEGO’?

Everything was awesome for Kevin Hart until “The LEGO Movie” came along.

“Ride Along,” the comedic actor’s collaboration with Ice Cube, cruised through a three-week streak atop the box office before it was stopped in its tracks by a bunch of (plastic) bricks. “The LEGO Movie” ended Hart’s reign with a $69 million debut. The star-power of the “LEGO” ensemble, the enduring popularity of the classic toys and overwhelmingly positive reviews were too much to handle.

Now Hart returns with the Valentine’s Day-friendly “About Last Night,” a remake of the 1986 romantic comedy (itself based on a David Mamet play) that starred Rob Lowe, Demi Moore and Elizabeth Perkins. The 2014 update features Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall, Joy Bryant and Paula Patton. Box office experts predicted a second win for “LEGO.”

Coming Soon’s “Weekend Warrior” columnist Edward Douglas predicted as much as $50 million for “The LEGO Movie” over the holiday weekend, with “About Last Night” a distant second at $24.2 million. Box Office Mojo predicted a much closer race in the $40 million range, but still gave the edge to “LEGO.”

Entertainment Weekly bumped “About Last Night” down to #3 in favor of another ’80s remake. The $120 million update of “

Alex Pettyfer (“Magic Mike”) and Gabriella Wilde (who was in last year’s remake of the 1976 horror flick “Carrie”) star opposite each other in yet another ’80s remake, “Endless Love.” The poorly reviewed romantic drama should open at #5 with somewhere around $15 million.
