Justin Bieber Is In Full-Grown Man Mode On These Two New Khalil Songs: Listen

by 21 mins ago

Justin Bieber is back.

Not that he ever really left. We follow his exploits closely, of course — whether it’s his selfie with Selena Gomez or his run-ins with the paparazzi.

But on Thursday (August 28), we got new music from the singer for the first time in quite some time. The Biebs — or, in this case, Bizzle — appears on two songs on a new mixtape from Khalil, A Long Story Short.

Like we heard on his December release Journals, Bieber is in full-on sensual, grown man R&B form here, leaving his days of bubble gum pop in the past. “Time For Bed” finds Khalil and JB singing over a gentle, smooth DJ Mustard-produced beat — far removed sonically from club smashes like “2 On” and “Show Me” on the producer’s resume.

We only get 16 seconds of Bieber before the 1 minute 43 second song fades out, but later on the 10-track effort, Bizzle pops up again. And for “Playtime,” he plays a more prominent role.

Earlier this year, the singer posted a video of a DJ Mustard-produced song on Instagram, but that’s not the one included on today’s release. No timetable for when that’ll drop, either, but it sounds like a return to the up-tempo and club-ready Mustard we’ve grown accustomed to.

And there may be plenty more from the two on the way.

Back in March, Mustard told MTV News he wants to play a heavy role in the ...

Wait, So What Exactly Is 5SOS’ Derp Con?

by 4 mins ago

Today, 5 Seconds Of Summer surprised their fandom with news of a convention later this year. Despite the fact that 5SOS only gave their followers about 12 hours of warning for Derp Con, the announcement still managed to trend worldwide. Think about it — they can literally just do that.

The Derp Con site opens with a scrolling “Star Was”-inspired intro about superheroes, saving the universe, and “like also some ninjas with like bombs that one time.” Translation: Fans of the pop-punk Aussies can enter for a chance to win a flight out to the convention, held at The Forum in Inglewood, California — a.k.a. where the guys performed “Amnesia” at the 2014 VMAs.

There, they’ll get to hang out with each other, hit up 5SOS’ biggest headlining show yet, and participate in a whole lot of general “banding.” Ummmm, maybe this video can explain it better than me.

How excited are you, 5SOS Fam?

Ready your nerves with their VMA performance.

‘Friends’: Where Are They Now?

by 4 mins ago

Pumpkin spice season may come and go, the sun may go behind clouds and your jeans might not always fit, but there’s one thing that will always be there for you: “Friends.” No, not your actual friends (humans are fickle), but the 10 seasons of the bygone sitcom, which airs for roughly 25 hours a day in reruns, if only you know where to look.

In addition to the omnipresent syndication, the show’s fandom has enjoyed two huge announcements in the past two days: 1. The announcement of a Central Perk pop-up shop in New York (you can sit on the couch!!); 2. a reunion mini-sode on last night’s Jimmy Kimmel.

In light of the latter, we got to thinking about what our favorite group of huge apartment-inhabiting pals have been up to in the past 10 years. Where are the friends now? (Don’t forget, by rule of Friends Penal Code Section 7 Bulletpoint Whatever Whatever Just Handle It, since more than a third of the original “Friends” core cast was present, last night’s reunion plotline was technically canon.)

Phoebe Buffay

Despite her decade of marriage with Mike and the love she feels for their child, Phoebe somehow always feels she’s always stuck in second gear. She’s shaved her head, swapped the guitar for an electric and eliminated chia seeds from her diet in an attempt to shake things up. Somehow, she feels a strange desire for Ross and his legendary lovemaking.

These Feminist Critiques Are Exactly What Video Games Need

by 10 mins ago

Despite the fact that today pretty much everyone plays video games in one form or another, there’s still that hardcore group of gamers that discuss and debate topics that rarely, if ever, reach the more casual player who likes to play Candy Crush on the subway. Sometimes those insular conversations do gain broader attention, but it’s usually not something good.

This time, a week of particularly ugly online comments, YouTube video rants and harassing tweets culminated with someone tweeting a series of increasingly disturbing threats to Anita Sarkeesian, a video blogger and pop culture critic. (Read here. Warning: NSFW)

When director/writer Joss Whedon defended Skarkeesian, he received this message.

How did it get to the point? Sadly, this kind of abuse is nothing new for Sarkeesian.

The onslaught of hate that some within the gaming community have brought down on Sarkeesian started back in the summer of 2012, when she launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a video series explaining some of the problematic tropes of video games when it came to the portrayal of women. She initially set a goal of $6,000, but when the campaign drew negative attention from gamers, it also brought more funds.

Nearly 7,000 backers pledged a total of over $150,000 to Sarkeesian’s campaign to explore why a rapidly expanding medium has such a troubled history and continuing relationship with half of the world’s population.

When Sarkeesian’s YouTube channel, “Feminist Frequency,” began rolling out “Tropes vs Women in Video Games” ...

The NFL Just Announced A New, Stricter Domestic Violence Policy

by 10 mins ago

Roger Goodell is making a change to existing domestic violence policy, and it’s a big one. The NFL commissioner came under fire last month after it was announced that Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice would suffer just a two-game suspension and the loss of three game checks following a brutal assualt on his fiancée.

Back in February, security cameras at an Atlantic City casino where the couple were staying caught the running back dragging his unconscious fiancee, Janay Palmer (now Rice), out of an elevator. Rice was charged with aggravated assault but the pair have since married and Rice avoided going to trial for the crime by entering a pre-trial diversion program.

On July 24, the league announced their own punishment for Rice’s actions. And the backlash was loud and fierce, especially in light of the NFL’s policies regarding controlled substances like marijuana, possession of which can lead to a year’s suspension and up to a whopping $500,000 fine. (Many in the sports community have called for revisions to these disciplinary policies as well.)

Taken together, the league gave the impression of being less concerned with domestic violence than with regulating the use of say, marijuana — which, for one, is now legal for recreational use in two states.

While Goodell initially defended his decision in the Rice case, he’s now revisited those policies and the result is a much stricter response. After the first offense ...

Iggy Azalea’s ‘Fancy’ Gets A ‘G-Mix’ From Lil’ Kim: Listen!

by 13 mins ago

Iggy Azalea’s breakthrough hit, “Fancy” featuring Charli XCX, got a remix today from noted fancywoman Lil’ Kim, and the results are as fancy as you’d expect. Sorry, did I say “remix”? The Brooklyn rapper actually dubs the near-minute of audio a “G-mix.” My apologies, Ms. Jones.

Related: Lil’ Kim Gets Explicit On Her “No Flex Zone” Remix

“I’m so fancy, please don’t touch me/ I’m fashionably late so please don’t rush me,” says Kim on the verse, before Charli comes in with her ridiculously infectious hook. Do you think that’s a reference to her Hard Core Mixtape 2k14, set to drop (at laaaaaaaast) on September 11? Either way, I’m just gonna go ahead and not rush the Queen Bee.

Listen to Lil’ Kim’s “G-mix” of Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” featuring Charli XCX below.

And ICYMI, here’s Iggy Azalea’s “Black Widow” performance at the 2014 VMAs featuring Rita Ora.

Marcus Haney Calls ‘No Cameras Allowed’ A Field Guide To Playing By Your Own Rules

by 34 mins ago

A sold-out show is a disappointment for most, but in Marcus Haney’s eyes, it’s an opportunity.

In 2010, while studying film in college, Haney found himself too short on cash to pay for entry to his dream festival, Coachella. So, armed with his trustiest cameras, he snuck in. The risk was big, but so was the reward: Jumping fences proved to pay off in dividends for Haney, who wound up snapping photos that were worthy of the pages of glossy magazines. And he didn’t stop there.

Tomorrow at 10/9c, MTV will air Haney’s film “No Cameras Allowed,” which chronicles the young artist’s experiences of breaking his way into City Limits, Glastonbury and Bonnaroo, among other big shows, capitalizing on his time before getting kicked out and earning some rave reviews for his images and films in the process (Mumford & Sons are among his devotees). Take a look at what Haney told MTV News about the movie, watch the trailer to see what you can expect and stay tuned for more information on Haney’s plan to take his production on the road.

NoCamerasSitMarcus Haney

What is it about festivals that are so alluring lately?
From a concert-goer’s point of view, you are getting more than a concert experience. You’re getting a weekend or a vacation or an escape. At a Coachella or a Bonnaroo, your phones are off, you’re worry-free, you’re with a bunch of friends and you can let loose a lot more. It’s an adventure ...

WorldStar Made Their New Miami Documentary Because ‘CNN And Fox’ Didn’t

by 36 mins ago

You can find a bit of everything on WorldStarHipHop.com, from rap videos and street fights to twerk sessions and sports highlights — it’s kind of like a one-stop shop for all things viral.

Lee “Q” O’Denat, likes to think of his site as a cable network, except on the web, where he shows “the good, the bad and the ugly,” as he’ll often remind you.

More often than not, WSHH is criticized for the bad and the ugly, but Q and his team have been working to change that perception with a series of documentaries they call “The Field.” The first “Field” doc focused on inner-city youth in Chicago and the violence that they face daily.

The second film, which was released last week focuses on Miami, a city that the media rarely shows in its totality. “With Miami, the city itself is known for South Beach and Ocean Drive and no one really gets to see outside of that,” Q explained to MTV News. “It’s a struggle going on and those locals are really passionate about their city… They’re ready to die for it.”

“The Field: Miami” takes viewers past the party strip into less affluent communities like Opa-Locka, Lil Haiti and Overtown and it speaks to those trapped in a cycle of street violence.

“I felt like it was our duty to step up to the plate and speak to these kids out there that thought the guns were the way out,” he said. “These kids ...

Watch James Brown Turn ‘Sex Machine’ Into A Ramen Commercial

by 15 mins ago

Sometimes the Internet just wants to do us all a solid and bring us a wee bit of curious joy. Today’s such instance is this James Brown ramen commercial, sung to the tune of “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine,” one of his most well-known songs. Timely, given that Chadwick Boseman-fronted biopic about the singer that just came out.

We’re going to go out on a limb and assume this particular incident didn’t make the film’s script. Not because it’s not infinitely interesting (because it is), but more so because it’s James Brown. In a ramen Commercial. Sung to the tune of “Get Up/Sex Machine.” Made in Japan. (Yes, your “Lost In Translation” jokes are very timely and accurate right now, so go ahead and make them.)

And no, we’re not complaining in the least. Because this, if anything, is a gift.

There is little else in the universe that is as enjoyable as seeing a very famous and acclaimed person doing something so silly that you know they hope never, ever sees the light of day in their home country. No doubt it is a very good thing that the Internet did not exist back when Brown recorded the commercial because, lawd knows, that is exactly what would’ve happened. Because, I mean, it’s a song about noodles, sung to the tune of a song about havin’ sex. And while, yeah, Americans love sex and food (and the two combined therein) perhaps a bit more ...

We’ve Tried Tim Hortons’ Buffalo Crunch Donut And Now Nothing Will Ever Be The Same

by 20 mins ago

Here’s the thing you need to understand: I love buffalo sauce. If I see something with the spicy, tangy red sauce on a menu, I cannot turn it down. I’m also in love with weird frankenfoods, to the point where I’d prefer to eat something weird, something bizarre, off the beaten path… Even if it ends up being totally unpalatable.

So when news broke that Tim Hortons was releasing a Buffalo Crunch Donut – and my coworkers here at MTV News can attest, this is true – I got so excited I couldn’t form words.

IMG_7300

Only problem: they’re available until Monday (September 1) only at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, NY, and Tim Hortons has no plans to make them generally available on the market.

After doing some quick calculations about whether it was worth driving four and a half hours either way to try a donut (pro: buffalo donut, con: four and a half hours each way), I instead contacted Tim Hortons, who were gracious enough to get a local store – run by a very accommodating man named Raymond Wong – to reproduce the recipe.

The original, as a bit of background, isn’t just a donut with some spicy crème. It’s the creation of local owner Anthony McEachern, who crafts unique donuts every year for the New York State Fair and Tim Hortons. In previous years, he’s made a donut that looked like a meatball sub, and this year he decided to embrace the spicy ...
