Fall Out Boy took their Save Rock and Roll revival to Brooklyn on Wednesday night, ripping through a raucous set as part of VH1’s Super Bowl Blitz … and they brought out a very special guest late in the fourth quarter.
Of course, if you weren’t lucky enough to be inside Brooklyn Bowl for the show, well, don’t fret: we’ve got the highlights right here. Because what’s a Super Bowl without some post-game analysis.
“The Phoenix”: FOB kicked off their set with the second single off Save Rock and Roll, and, after being introduced by Stacy Keibler (?) and a dude in a penguin suit (?!?), they came out firing. Joe Trohman posed and preened, Pete Wentz bounded across the stage, and Andy Hurley bashed viciously, with Patrick Stump shouting “Put on your war paint!” The whole thing culminated in a crashing crescendo, with Wentz and Stump growling “Wave the white flag!” Oh, and there was an actual white flag, too.
“Dance, Dance”: All it took was Hurley’s pounding drum pattern and Wentz’s pumping bass to get the crowd fired for this classic FOB track. “Dance” raced along at a breakneck pace, revving into overdrive during the pre-chorus. It was like 2005 all over again, and FOB showed that they haven’t lost a step since that breakout season.
“Sugar, We’re Going Down” (with Hayley Williams): Surprise, surprise! FOB are hitting the road with Paramore this summer, so consider this a sneak preview. Williams added sweetness and sass to the song’s iconic chorus, then stood atop a monitor to lead the crowd in a rowdy sing-along. And judging by the way they responded, the “Monumentour” is shaping up to be something big.
“Thnks Fr The Mmrs”: With the crowd sufficiently whipped into a frenzy, FOB took things to another level, tearing through this Infinity on High single. Like always, it was a collection of crunching chords and an audience-wide clap along, though these days, Stump gets to showcase his soulful pipes, too … and he really belted out those last few lines
“My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light ‘Em Up)”: There’s a pretty good chance you’ll hear this song at some point during Sunday’s Big Game … that’s how synonymous it’s become with sports. And FOB attacked their hit with a largess that was fitting of a true arena anthem. The beats skittered, the guitars crashed, and Stump’s “Woah-oh-oh-oh!” yelps had everyone ready to bust out of Brooklyn Bowl and tackle someone on the street. Now that’s how you do a pre game.
Shoot, just look how fired up Hayley Williams was! Can’t wait for Sunday.
