George Lucas Got Married, He Did

There’s no indication whether he played the triumphant end title music from “Star Wars” or had C-3PO preside over the ceremony, but George Lucas was married for the second time on Saturday.

In a ceremony at Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, California, Lucas married long-time partner Mellody Hobson, the president of Ariel Investments and chairman of Dreamworks Animation. Lucas’ marriage to Hobson is his second, after his first, to Marcia Griffin, ended in 1983, and it’s Hobson’s first.

The “Star Wars” creator made a number of significant changes in his life in the last few years. Following the release of his 2012 film “Red Tails,” Lucas announced his retirement from producing films on the scale of his previous work, such as in the “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” series, although it’s unclear whether that also includes the plan to tell at least one more “Indiana Jones” story. Meanwhile, The Walt Disney Company acquired his Lucasfilm company in October 2012 for the impressive sum of $4.05 billion, and Lucas appointed Kathleen Kennedy president of the company and brand manager for upcoming “Star Wars”-related projects.

In attendance at the ceremony was Steven Spielberg, Lucas’ longtime friend and collaborator, and director Francis Ford Coppola, who helped Lucas get several of his earliest films produced. Musical artists Van Morrison and Janelle Monae performed at the wedding reception. Lucas’ son Jett served as his best man, and his daughters Katie and Amanda served as bridesmaids.
