‘How I Met Your Mother’ Actor Dishes On Scene That Would Have Changed The Finale

We’re not quite ready to let “How I Met Your Mother” go, and neither, it seems, is cast member Alyson Hannigan.

Speaking to TVLine, Hannigan, who played core character Lily over the show’s nine seasons, said there was one scene in particular cut from the finale that she thinks viewers would have loved: Ted’s wife’s funeral.

She described it as a “one-second montage” that would have allowed audiences to mourn the mother along with Ted, and to see that the character had gotten some closure. The more complete cut, Hannigan said, was sadder but more satisfying than the finale that aired.

“Honestly, if you saw [that] cut, it would be even more heart-wrenching than what the finale was,” Hannigan said. “They were like, ‘No. It’s just too gut-wrenching.’ And I was like, ‘That’s what I want. I want my heart ripped out and slammed on the floor and, like, stomped on!’”

Indeed, “stomped” is certainly an adjective that could have been used for the finale that aired last month, funeral or no funeral.

Perhaps the cut scene will be included on the upcoming DVD release of the show’s final season. Co-creator Carter Bays has teased that several deleted scenes will be available on the home release of the show.

What do you think? Would you have preferred to see the mother’s funeral? Were you happy with the finale of “How I Met Your Mother”?
