Is The Batman Universe Getting Its Own ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ In ‘Gotham’?

Just as Marvel heroes are making their big jump to television with “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” DC Comics and Warner Bros. are countering with a series of their own.

Deadline is reporting that Fox just made a series order for “Gotham,” which will explore the early years of Detective Jim Gordon, future police commissioner and friend of Batman. Much in the style of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Gotham” tells the story of the average citizens doing their part to maintain justice in the world, even if they don’t have superpowers.

While the announcement made it clear that Batman won’t be appearing in the series, there are many other elements of the notoriously crime-ridden city that will feel familiar to any fan of the Dark Knight. The crime in Gotham is what made Bruce Wayne be Batman, so it’s safe to assume that the colorful villains he fights off after he dons the cape and cowl will be there beforehand.

Without the bankroll or the superhero technology that made Batman the Dark Knight, Jim Gordon will likely have to rely on his smarts as a cop to bring down the same caliber of costumed villains.

“Gotham” reportedly started a bidding war between the networks with Fox winning out in the end. The series will be overseen by Bruno Heller, who created “The Mentalist,” and the network has already promised to air the series, even before the pilot has been cast and shot. Expect to hear casting news next and then plans to film the first episode.

There is no word on when “Gotham” will debut on Fox.
