Kanye West is feeling a little sentimental today, but can you blame him? Exactly 10 years ago he released his debut album, The College Dropout, laying out chapter one in a flourishing career that has seen no limits since then. That’s definitely worth reflecting on.
On Monday (February 10), ‘Ye took to Twitter to thank fans for sticking with him through his come up, reiterating that it wasn’t an easy ride.
“Ten years ago today we finally released what had been my life’s work up to that point: The College Dropout,” he began. “I say “finally” because it was a long road, a constant struggle, and a true labor of love to not only convince my peers and the public that I could be an artist, but to actually get that art out for the world to hear. I am extremely grateful to each and every person along that road who helped, lent an ear, lent their voice, gave of their heart to that project, and to all the projects that followed, and are to come.”
Though we often hear Kanye venting about his issues with detractors, today he was only focused on the positive.
“I am honored and humbled by my fans, for the unwavering support and love over the past ten years,” he continued. “I wake up every day trying to give something back to you that you can rock to and be proud of. Ten years later I am still the same kid from Chicago, still dreaming out loud, still banging on the door. The doors may be heavier, but I promise you WE WILL BREAK THEM.”
To celebrate the album’s 10th anniversary, MTV News dug into the archives, coming up with a Kanye interview that took place the same month he released The College Dropout in 2004. From the footage, it’s easy to see that he hasn’t lost any of the passion that initially launched his career.
“I have everything to say because there’s so many doubters,” he told MTV News’ Sway Calloway at the time. “I got a lot of frustration because I’m hurt. People told me I couldn’t rap, I couldn’t sell a record, that I didn’t have a f—ing chance and it hurt me. I just wanna stunt.”
Kanye might be fighting with different demons in this decade, but he’s still changing the game one record (and rant) at a time.
His fiancée Kim Kardashian also celebrated the milestone on Instagram with some sugary words.
