‘LEGO Movie’ Building Closer To $300 Million

Everything remained “awesome” for “The LEGO Movie” over the weekend. But as for “3 Days to Kill” and “Pompeii”? Eh, not so much.

“The LEGO” movie easily retained the #1 spot at the box office, as newcomers “Pompeii” and “3 Days to Kill” both flopped. Only “Shrek 2” has enjoyed a better weekend number three than “LEGO,” which snapped together another $31.5 million on its way to $275 million worldwide ($183 million of that domestically).

The the family friendly “The LEGO Movie” is the biggest flick of 2014 thus far, having now passed the $123 million haul of “Ride Along.” Plus, while the Kevin Hart/Ice Cube action comedy did well commercially, it suffered from overwhelmingly bad reviews. “The LEGO Movie” has garnered the same sort of critical acclaim it’s gathered at the box office.

No word yet as to whether or not the the A-list . It’s a safe bet that Chris Pratt’s star-power will have only grown larger by 2017 in the wake of “Guardians of the Galaxy” and the long-awaited “Jurassic World,” which he was kind enough to spill about to MTV News recently.

Action vehicle “3 Days to Kill” was a dud over the weekend, debuting in a distant second place with just $12.3 million. It’s the third in a recent spate of flops (“Colombiana,” “From Paris with Love”) produced by French filmmaker Luc Besson, director of the 1994 masterpiece, “The Professional.”

“Pompeii” had an even harder time generating enthusiasm from audiences, echoing the destructive power of that ancient volcano upon Sony’s $100 million budget. “Pompeii” opened with $10 million (plus another $22 million around the world). Adjusted for ticket price inflation, it’s the worst opening for director Paul W.S. Anderson, the man behind the “Resident Evil” franchise, as well as 1995’s “Mortal Kombat,” 1997’s “Event Horizon” and 2004’s “Alien vs. Predator.”

At $58 million, “The Monuments Men” is the biggest movie ever directed by George Clooney, That’s $18 million more than his previous directorial best, “The Ides of March.”. Clooney’s film was #5 over the weekend, with the “RoboCop” remake just above it at $9.4 million during its second weekend.

“The LEGO Movie” wasn’t the only animated flick with something to celebrate. “Frozen” is the second biggest animated flick of all time with over $980 million worldwide (and it has yet to open in Japan). The Disney blockbuster has beaten “Despicable Me 2” ($970 million), “Shrek 2” ($919.8 million) and “Finding Nemo” ($895 million). Only “Toy Story 3,” which made $1.06 billion, stands in its way. All of the top five, save for “Shrek 2,” earned about 60 percent of total revenue from foreign markets.
