Lena Dunham: Taylor Swift Is My ‘Feminist Role Model’

Ch-ch-ch-changes: the cornerstone of any internal growth spurt — sort of like the one Taylor Swift has undergone in the past two years. She’s shaking off any criticism and figuring out what feminism means to her. A topic of which her BFF Lena Dunham is quite fond. Natch.

The “Girls” showrunner/actor/doer-of-all-the-things tweeted in support of Swift and her evolution and growth on the matter — a change from her earlier days of declaring herself not a feminist.

The article in question was Friday’s profile of Swift in U.K. paper The Guardian, wherein the singer clarifies her opinion on the women’s equality movement and whether or not she considers herself a feminist.

“As a teenager, I didn’t understand that saying you’re a feminist is just saying that you hope women and men will have equal rights and equal opportunities,” said Swift.

“For so long it’s been made to seem like something where you’d picket against the opposite sex, whereas it’s not about that at all,” Swift said, crediting a lot of her own acceptance and understanding of the term to Dunham herself. “Becoming friends with Lena – without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for – has made me realize that I’ve been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so.”

Of course, we’re joining Dunham in giving big ups to Swift and would like to plus-one our excitement for Swift’s performance at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards tonight.
