You’d think Macklemore would be out celebrating his four wins at the 2014 Grammy Awards, but the Seattle rapper took some time to clear the air and spread love to Kendrick Lamar, who he beat out in four categories including Album of the Year. “You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have,” Macklemore wrote in a text message that he sent to Lamar and then took a screen shot of and posted to his Instagram account.
“It’s weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started playing during my speech, and I froze,” he continued. “Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and as a friend. Much love.”
Macklemore went into more depth when he captioned the photo. “My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album. I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO, And that’s taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it’s proper respect,” he wrote about his Album of the Year win.
“With that being said, thank you to the fans. You’re the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That’s what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys.”
Earlier in the day, Mack shared another text exchange between him and Kendrick. “Lets get it bro! wake up call! We worked hard as f—,” Lamar wrote as the “Thrift Shop” rapper responded: “You already know homie. Time to celebrate!!! Congrats my friend. What a f—ing year.”
In the week leading up to Sunday’s awards show, an unnamed source told the Associated Press that “most” members of the rap committee of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences looked to keep Macklemore & Ryan Lewis out of the award ceremony’s rap categories, arguing that their pop success was a strike against their hip-hop cred.
On Grammy night, the duo went on to win awards in the Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Album, Best New Artist and Album of the Year categories, where their The Heist was up against Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis defended their nominations in a red carpet interview with MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway. “Of course we deserve to be in that category, no question,” Ryan Lewis said defiantly about their hip-hop nominations.
“It is a beautiful time in hip-hop music where people are pushing the comfort zone of the listener, of the art. If you look at the list of the people that were nominated for Best Rap Album, everybody in their own way pushed people out of their comfort zone,” Macklemore added. “With that being said, I think that we gratefully, humbly are one of those five people. We should be there. I came up on hip-hop music, this is the foundation, it’s beats and rhymes, that’s what it is first and foremost.”
