SAN DIEGO — Newly minted box-office hero Henry Cavill played it coy when it came to talk of a rumored “Man of Steel” sequel, but one of his co-stars was a bit more forthcoming at last night’s Superman 75th Anniversary Celebration bash at San Diego Comic-Con.
“It looks like it’s going to happen,” Harry Lennix, the man who played General Swanwick (and worked for “Avengers” director Joss Whedon on the short-lived TV series “Dollhouse”), confidently told MTV.
Cavill himself wasn’t ready to make such bold declarations. “I don’t know anything about ‘Man of Steel 2’ yet. I don’t even know if it’s going ahead,” insisted the British actor, who has no doubt dodged that line of questioning for months now.”
“Nothing in Hollywood is a safe bet,” he added. “It’s not done till it’s done.”
Even before Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” had collected $628.8 million around the world, fan speculation ran rampant about not only potential sequels, but the ultimate of DC team-ups, “The Justice League.” Sure, “Green Lantern” was a misfire and Christian Bale insisted he’s retired the cape and cowl, but there’s no reason to believe Warner Bros. doesn’t want to launch their own $1 billion franchise to compete with “Marvel’s The Avengers.”
The next morning, the Los Angeles Times’ “Hero Complex” published a report that said an announcement about a Superman/Batman team-up movie was imminent, with the paper reporting Warner Bros. would unveil plans for the project during the Hall H panel on Saturday (July 20). “Superman & Batman” would presumably arrive before “Man of Steel 2,” or perhaps even in its place. The Hollywood Reporter that published a report that indicated a “Flash” movie will appear in 2016 and a “Justice League” movie will hit theaters in 2017.
