Nicki Minaj Explains Why That Banana In Her ‘Anaconda’ Video Was Very Important

At this point it seems like we’ve dissected Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” video (and single artwork) in just about every way possible, but some people are still looking for more answers. Like, what’s the deeper meaning behind all of that “Anaconda” imagery — is there any? Is it all about the ass?

In a new interview with GQ, Nicki Minaj reiterates that maybe we’re just searching too intently for answers here. She told MTV News something similar on VMA night, explaining that she didn’t think the video was sexy to begin with.

“She is just talking about two guys that she dated in the past and what they’re good at and what they bought her and what they said to her. It’s just cheeky, like a funny story,” the YMCMB rapper told GQ.

“I don’t know what there is to really talk about,” she added. “I’m being serious. I just see the video as being a normal video.”

When pressed further, she added another layer. “I think the video is about what girls do,” she said. “Girls love being with other girls, and when you go back to us being younger, we would have slumber parties and we’d be dancing with our friends.”

Nicki even maintains that she was surprised at people’s reaction to the “Anaconda” cover art, which she shot when the video was filmed. “I just said I’ll put it out, never thought in a billion years that people would be putting [other] people’s heads on it. It’s the craziest sh–,” she said. “What hasn’t it been? They’ve made it everything.”

Is that really all there is to the “Anaconda” story though? Maybe there was some messaging in there that we missed.

“I’m chopping up the banana. Did you realize that?” she finally pointed out, about the video.

“At first I’m being sexual with the banana, and then it’s like, ‘Ha-ha, no,’” she went on to explain. “That was important for us to show in the kitchen scene, because it’s always about the female taking back the power, and if you want to be flirty and funny that’s fine, but always keeping the power and the control in everything.”

So there you have it. A little bit of female empowerment, with the help of a banana.

Nicki is currently prepping her third album The Pinkprint for release in November.
