Oscars 2014 Predictions: Best Director

In the Oscars battle for Best Director, there are no bad choices.

David O. Russell clearly ushered an ensemble unlike any other for “American Hustle,” given the near sweep of acting nominations from the film.

Alexander Payne once again nails small town America in “Nebraska,” bringing great dramatic performances from normally comedic actors.

Steve McQueen managed to present a horrific subject with an unflinching eye in “12 Years a Slave.”

And Martin Scorsese was back to his old rabble rousing tricks in “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

…But only one man will bring home the gold:

Best Director
Who Will Win: Alfonso Cuarón
MTV’s movie of the year, and with only one exception every major award has followed suit. This is Cuarón’s to lose.

Oscars 2014 Prediction: Best Director

Who Should Win: Alfonso Cuarón
Then there’s the human element. In a year where we saw Sandra Bullock goof around with Melissa McCarthy in “The Heat,” we also saw Bullock alone on screen for nearly the entire running time of “Gravity” and could not believe her human, lived in performance. Cuarón is a director who, in the midst of striking technical achievements never forgets the human element. He’s got this locked up.
