Quentin Tarantino Drops ‘Hateful Eight’ After Script Leak

If you’re a Quentin Tarantino fan, you’ll hate the following news: “The Hateful Eight” is on indefinite hold.

The “Django Unchained” filmmaker was planning on directing another new Western titled “The Hateful Eight” as his next film, with actors like Bruce Dern and Christoph Waltz reportedly up for roles. But those days are over, at least for now. In an interview with Deadline, Tarantino reveals that the script for “Hateful Eight” leaked, after he had circulated it to no more than “six people.” Tarantino went so far as to identify the six: actors Bruce Dern, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and their agents.

“The one I know didn’t do this is Tim Roth,” said Tarantino. “One of the others let their agent read it, and that agent has now passed it on to everyone in Hollywood. I don’t know how these f—ing agents work, but I’m not making this next. I’m going to publish it, and that’s it for now. I give it out to six people, and if I can’t trust them to that degree, then I have no desire to make it.”

Tarantino said that he “could totally change his mind” about wanting to make “The Hateful Eight” some day, but as of right now, “I’m not doing it next.” But that’s not the end of the project: Tarantino plans to shop the “Hateful Eight” script to publishers and release it as a book.

The director also acknowledged that many of his past films have experienced script leaks well before the films’ theatrical releases, including “Inglourious Basterds” and “Django Unchained.” In Tarantino’s eyes, this is about a different issue.

“I am not talking out of both sides of my mouth, because I do like the fact that everyone eventually posts it, gets it and reviews it on the net,” he said. “Frankly, I wouldn’t want it any other way. I like the fact that people like my s—, and that they go out of their way to find it and read it. But I gave it to six motherf—ing people! Starting this week, I’ll be setting meetings with publishers.”

Tarantino’s decision is disappointing news for those awaiting his next Western epic, but on the bright side, the director already has a new project in mind.

“The idea was, I was going to write two scripts,” he said. “I wasn’t going to shoot the Western until next winter, and I have been full of piss and vinegar about the other one. So now I’ll do that one.”

What do you think of Tarantino’s decision to drop “The Hateful Eight” over a script leak?
