Rachel Bilson Gets Real About Zoe Hart: ‘I Want To Smack Her All The Time’

We all know the deal: over the course of several seasons of a TV show, characters evolve and mature, but certain things just never change. Rachel Bilson, star of the CW’s “Hart of Dixie,” now in its third season on air, knows that as well as anyone.

“She’s still as crazy as ever,” she laughingly told MTV News of her character, Dr. Zoe Hart. “I want to smack her all the time.”

The series centers on Bilson’s character, who fled from her failed New York City dreams and became a general practitioner in the small town of Bluebell, Alabama. The travails of a city girl in a less-than-metropolitan setting center the series, as well as Zoe’s adventures in romance.

In its third year, Bilson says, “It’s been a nice season.”

“Zoe’s in a relationship, a real long-term relationship for the first time, and I think that’s been very nice,” she said.

Of course, Bilson is most widely known for an earlier foray into TV: popular teen soap “The O.C.,” which was also a product of “Hart” showrunner Josh Schwartz.

Her previous working relationship with Schwartz, however, doesn’t mean she gets special privileges or say in her character’s storylines.

“We don’t get the new scripts until maybe a day before we start,” Bilson said. “We have table reads, but that’s usually the first time we see what’s coming up, so by the time we’re like, ‘wait a minute, what’s — ‘ they’re like, ‘oh, it’s too late to change that, sorry.'”

She laughs off anything she’s asked to do in the service of the role, she said.

“I’ve gone full-in the whole time, so I’m kind of just ready for whatever. I’m like alright, what am I falling into now?”

“Hart of Dixie” airs on The CW on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET.
