Firestarter: Rich Homie Quan
Rich Homie Quan began hitting the studio because he wanted fans to feel his pain, but on Saturday, Atlanta rap fans will watch their city’s newest star take center stage and share his love for music at 107.9’s annual Birthday Bash concert.
B.o.B, 2 Chainz, French Montana, Young Dro and Trinidad Jame$ may be the marquee names set to appear at Phillips Arena on Saturday, but fans are geared up to see Quan, who has recently emerged as A-Town’s most exciting newcomer thanks to melodic rap tracks like and the menacing “Better Watch What You Sayin’.”
Quan’s auto-tuned sing-songy rap style has been compared to others on the Atlanta rap scene, but Rich Homie assures us that he is different. “In my music I ain’t tryna be the next dope boy, I ain’t tryna to get out here and talk about stuff I don’t have. I want people to just hear my real story,” he told Mixtape Daily. “I’ll tell you about how I wore the same shoes three days in a row, same outfit three days in a row. I ain’t sayin’ it so you can laugh now.”
Coming up, Quan was inspired by Southern spitters with messages like Juvenile, Webbie and Lil Boosie. Before rap Rich had a run in with the law and was locked up, but upon his release met his mentor Teezy, who would sign Quan to his Loyalty Over Royalties (L.O.R.) record label. Things were finally going good for Quan until Teezy was murdered in December 2011. Now he raps with new purpose. “That hurt,” he admitted. “Ain’t nobody ever gave me no chance and homey who do give me a chance, he gets killed… Now I got a little more fuel to my flame, no I’ma add to my story.”
RHQ remembers just two years ago spending his last $200 on a new outfit so he could attend Birthday Bash as a fan, now that he’s actually on the bill, the spitter could barely muster up the words to capture his excitement. “It’s gonna be an indescribable feeling,” he said.
