‘Robocop’: Joel Kinnaman And Gary Oldman’s Relationship Was ‘Quite Touching’

When audiences go to see “Joel Kinnaman, who plays the titular role, it was working with co-star Gary Oldman that made the remake worth it.

“It’s one of the great experiences of my career and my life,” Kinnaman told us while discussing the true relationship at the heart of the new film: that of RoboCop and his creator.

In the film, Oldman plays Dr. Dennett Norton, an OCP employee on a deadline to deliver an up-to-spec and on-time cybernetic cop. And he gets his chance once Detective Alex Murphy is mortally wounded in a car bombing; and accident that destroys most of the Detroit cop’s body.

“It starts out as almost like Dr. Frankenstein and his monster, and then it transitions into this father and son relationship,” Kinnaman said. Oldman added that what happens next becomes, “quite touching at times,” as Dr. Norton grapples with his desire to deliver a profitable RoboCop unit, with his duty to preserve the humanity of his patient.

Kinnaman and Oldman also co-starred in the upcoming Soviet-era drama “Child 44,” but didn’t get a chance to shoot any scenes together. So Kinnaman was thrilled to learn that he’d get the chance to work opposite an actor he admires so deeply.

“I had the most difficult and demanding scenes with him,” Kinnaman said of their relationship. “It was an incredible experience.”

“RoboCop” is in theaters now.
