The robots have landed, and they are funky. On a night when the even money was on Sara Bareilles pulling off a Grammy surprise or Macklemore & Ryan Lewis having an even more massive night than they already did, when the curtain fell on the 56th annual Grammy Awards, it was a pair of silent robots from France who took home the top prize.
Who Was That Little Dude?
After asking collaborator Pharrell to do the honors twice before, when time came to accept Album of the Year, Daft Punk masterminds Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter nominated famed songwriter and Random Access Memories collaborator Paul (“The Rainbow Connection”) Williams to do the honors.
All Love For ‘Same Love’
An emotional Williams joked about how he used to have visions back before he got sober, “Then two robots called me and asked me to make an album,” he joked. “We are Random Access Memories, some of us more random than others.”
Though they don’t speak, William said he got a message from the mute mechanical duo about what their album was all about. “As elegant and as classy as the Grammys has ever been was the moment when we saw those wonderful marriages,” he said, referring to the couples who said their vows during an emotional version of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Same Love” which featured Madonna. “And it was the height of fairness and love and the power of love for all people at any time in any combination is what they wanted me to say,” Williams added.
Say Goodbye To All Those ‘Get Lucky’ Puns
Just a short time earlier, in category where just about everyone was already a winner on Sunday night (January 26), the prestigious Record of the Year Grammy also went to the pair for their smash, “Get Lucky.” The French robots, who had just rocked the stage with Stevie Wonder, Pharrell and Nile Rodgers, made their way up to the stage in their white suits and helmets and accepted their fourth Grammy of the night.

They were there, but of course they didn’t speak, letting Skateboard P do the talking again. “Well, I suppose the robots would like to thank,” Pharrell started. “Honestly I bet France is really proud of these guys right now … Thank you guys so much. We appreciate it. This has been awesome this year.”
Sure, they lost out, but Imagine Dragons could lick their wounds after winning Best Rock Performance before the show started for “Radioactive.” And, not for nothin’, completely shutting things down with their Kendrick Lamar mash-up, which had everyone on their feet. Robin Thicke had his confounding hook-up with Chicago to hang his hat on during a night when he got blanked and well, Bruno Mars just kind of got “Locked Out Of Heaven” this time around. (Though he did snag Best Pop Vocal Album for Unorthodox Jukebox.)
And Lorde can drown her tears in the pair of golden gramophones she got for Best New Artist and Song of the Year. Daft Punk stormed back into the music world last year with Random Access Memories after a nearly eight-year studio album absence from the scene. In addition to the Album and Record Of The Year, they also won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Get Lucky” and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
