Keep both eyes open and direct them toward the season finale, airing in just a few short weeks — because that’s the next place you’ll see super-spy Nick Fury.
Samuel L. Jackson is set to reprise his role as Marvel’s one-eyed shadow operative in the final episode of “S.H.I.E.L.D.’s” first season, according to what the man himself revealed to Vulture this week. He stopped short of spilling any story details (“I don’t talk about Marvel’s business,” he said, “None of us do.”), but based on the events of we can certainly take a guess.
By the way, that’s your signal that major “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” spoilers are ahead. Last chance to turn away.
Still here? Okay! Let’s talk about what Fury popping up in the “S.H.I.E.L.D.” finale tells us about where the show is headed.
At the end of “Winter Soldier,” S.H.I.E.L.D. is dismantled, and Nick Fury is presumed dead — to the world at large, at least. Cap, Falcon, Black Widow and Maria Hill all know better, as Fury has traded in the eyepatch for sunglasses, and his sleek leather attire for a casual hoodie, all in an attempt to lean into the situation and embrace his “death.” Heck, the guy even has a tombstone and everything!
What’s Fury up to next? It’s hard to say. In his final “Winter Soldier” appearance, he asks Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson to accompany him on an upcoming assignment. The two soldiers politely decline. But there’s someone a lot more likely to accept Fury’s marching orders — a certain beloved Marvel man who has some experience with death of his own.
Starting with tonight’s all-new episode, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” will feel the ramifications of “Winter Soldier.” Coulson’s employers have shut down shop, and Fury’s gone. We expect the folks on the Bus to start dealing with that new status quo, as well as the newly exposed enemies of HYDRA, as soon as tonight.
But as far as learning that Fury is still alive? That looks likely to be an end-of-season reveal. And who knows what that might mean for the future of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” assuming the show returns for a second season. Is it possible that Coulson’s team will work as shadow operatives working between the cracks, going off on missions assigned by an underground Fury? If the show needs a new name, both “Secret Avengers” and “Fury’s Howling Commandos” aren’t bad places to start.
