As always, “Sherlock” left us with plenty to ponder ’til the series finale. Here are the questions upon which we’re dwelling while we wait until next week, and “His Last Vow.” Can we get a Sherlockian wedding planning service, please? Who’s Redbeard? Is there trouble in Molly’s doppleganger paradise? Was that telegram actually a nasty-gram? What happened to the gang of evil clowns?
A sociopathic guardian angel who can divine the true sentiment behind an RSVP card, shame the bride’s obsessed ex-boyfriend into submission, wrangle the weird little kid, and remember the precise color of the bridesmaids’ dresses whilst making art out of napkins? Yes. YES. This is a service we need — am I right ladies?
Just before Sherlock hangs up on Mycroft after their chat during the wedding reception, the older Holmes slips in a final jab: “Remember Redbeard?” For Sherlock, the answer is obviously yes, but the rest of us? Stumped. Is this a reference to a young Sherlock’s silly aspirations of piracy? A secret code word, a la Lazarus? A sly nod on the part of Mark Gatiss to the state of his actual, real-life facial fuzz?
After all that poor Molly Hooper has been through, girlfriend really deserves a happily-ever-after with her lovely fiance, who just happens to look like a world-class Cumberbatch Sherlock cosplayer. But alas, the man’s Sherlockian similarities are only skin-deep, to Molly’s major embarrassment. We’re hold out hope that the relationship be saved if Tom promises to stick with seduction, not deduction, but the scowl on the medical examiner’s face says that this romance is probably doomed.
Sherlock’s reading of the wedding telegrams was uncomfortable for many reasons, but one in particular — a missive from “Cam”, which addressed Mary as “poppet” and made reference to her dead parents — seemed to give the new Mrs. Watson a case of the major uncomfies. And when it’s no secret that this series’ villain is one Charles Augustus Magnussen, there’s a chance that we just got the teensiest tip as to where we’ll be headed for “His Last Vow.”
Seriously, “Sherlock,” way to leave us hanging. Were the Waters gang caught? Prosecuted? Jailed? Or are they still out there, robbing, clowning, fomenting unspeakable terror from beneath their garish masks of villainy? Because if there’s even a chance of one of those dudes popping up in a future episode, we deserve to be forewarned.
