As with most blockbusters that make upwards of $446 million at the worldwide box office, there are already plans to follow up “Zachary Quinto is to be believed, we might be jumping into warp speed sooner than we initially thought.
At the Galway Film Festival in Ireland, Quinto, the actor currently wearing the pointy ears as Spock, reportedly told the movie blog BuzzHub that a third “Star Trek” movie could film as early as next year. ” ‘Star Trek 3’ should be filming, I suppose, next year,” Quinto said. “It’s going to be made a lot quicker than the last one. That’s the plan, although nothing is confirmed yet.”
There are a few issues here that indicate all of this talk should be taken with a particularly large grain of salt.
While it’s not inconceivable by any stretch of the imagination that Paramount would want to quickly pump out another “Trek,” it would be an unusually short turnaround for an enormous sci-fi tentpole. Though “Into Darkness” performed better overall at the box office thanks to strong foreign ticket sales, the sequel couldn’t match its predecessor in the United States, so the studio may want to strike while the iron is hot and awareness of the series is up.
Quinto also suggested that Abrams is likely to return for a third “Star Trek.” This is especially problematic if, as Quinto suggested, “Star Trek 3” plans on starting production next year. Abrams’ “Star Wars: Episode VII” has a January start date tentatively on the books and a 2015 release date to meet. That schedule does not allow for a “Star Trek” to be squeezed anywhere.
Quinto himself has also previously dispelled rumors that Abrams could return to direct, telling Metro, “It’s almost impossible to happen because of his commitment to ‘Star Wars.’ As much as I would love to see him back directing, I also understand the reality that may not happen. I’m sure if he’s not able to do it, he’ll find someone else worthy of taking over the franchise.”
Paramount has not responded to our request for comment as of this writing. We’ll keep an eye out for any further updates about a new “Star Trek” sequel.
