‘The Flash’ Pilot Gets A ‘Smash’ing New Cast Member

Looks like our secret dream that The CW’s “The Flash” will turn out to be the first televised superhero musical is one step closer to reality: singer/thespian Jesse L. Martin has joined the cast as Detective West.

As previously reported, the spin-off of “

When he was last referenced on “Arrow,” it was revealed he was in a coma after the lightning strike. Most likely he’ll wake up right around this Fall, when The CW will presumably air the “

Rounding out the cast will be Martin, who will play, “an honest, blue-collar cop who is a surrogate father to Barry. A soulful, funny and caring father to Iris — Barry’s potential love interest — West came up through the foster care system and took Barry in after his mother’s slaying and father’s imprisonment. He believes in Barry and supports his efforts to prove his father’s innocence.”

That confirms a number of rumors around the project, including whether “Ghostbusters” Ernie Hudson would play Detective West (clearly not), and whether Barry and Iris would have a “Flowers in the Attic” inspired relationship (clearly so, and yuck). Also, unless he gets murdered in the pilot to provide some sort of heroic impetus for Barry, it means Martin will once again be playing a Detective long-term, something he did for 200 episodes on “Law & Order.”

Also, he’s really good at singing, as is Gustin. Let’s cast Jennifer Hudson as Iris West and call it a night.

“The Flash” will premiere this fall on The CW.
